Big island - Which Place am I thinking of? Help Please!
 

So, we were driving to Kohala from Volcano NP.

Not too far out of town (as in closer to Volcano than to anyplace else) we came through a little town, or maybe just a place to stay on the right side of the road. It was very basic...like a compound that I would call like a summer camp feel to it.

There was maybe a gas station or very small store across the road, and I remember thinking...with more time I would love to spend a night here.

Of course, we were racing to get to the way too expensive hotel before dark so didn;t slow down. It was probably 1999 or so...

Any ideas at all?

So maybe it was less than an hour outside of Volcano...not the outskirts, just to make it clear.

The road flattened out...there was a lot of green...grass and trees.

Maybe it was Kalopa State Recreation Area.

I was driving from Kohala to Volcano myself, and saw this place, and thought it would be a perfect place to stay with extended family or friends.

The cabins seemed very inexpensive, and so charming. It was just a bit off the road, I thought.

You might be thinking of the Kilauea Lodge. We stayed in a cabin there and loved it.

Thanks to both of you...it does look exactly like that Kalopa NP, but the maps show that located on the other side from where we were...and we were driving away from the KL, actually!

I was looking at Google earth and I found something that fits exactly what I thought it was...at least in terms of the location, right down to the gas station across the street...

Unfortunately that place does not get good reviews...but maybe there is another nearby.
