Big Island volcano news: 44 acres of lava bench collapsed!

Jump to last reply

Did anyone witness this huge lava bench collapse in Volcano National Park? We were at the Volcano NP on Sat. and Sun, and the collapse occurred on Monday! Doh, we missed it!

We were driving from Hilo to South Kohala to check in our hotel on Monday afternoon, and saw bumper-to-bumper traffic going the opposite direction. We actually pulled over and asked a local what's going on, whether there's some coastal evacuation. The guy said it's just normal traffic--people were probably doing xmas shopping in Waimea -- on Monday night!! I bet they were all running to see the historic bench collapse--the biggest in 22 years!

We didn't turn on the tv during our stay at the resort, and only learned about this news today. Surprised that's there's no coverage of this in any mainstream media. Even the volcano park website didn't even mention this! What's going??

Well, still regretted that we missed this historic event when we were just right there on vacation!
