Big Island - suggestions for lesser known snorkel spots?
Already planning on the usual biggies: Kealakekua (going to hike down to the monument and back up), Honaunau, Kahaluu. We will also check out the north end of Hapuna and possibly Puako, also perhaps Beach 69, although last time we were there the flies were terrible. This will be our fourth trip to the BI, we love Kealakekua but oddly enough have never been to Honaunau (two-step).
How are the remote beaches in the Waikoloa/Kohala area? Naturally I've read everything I can find, but I could use some direct recommendations. Any little unknown spots where you've had good luck? |
On the east side of the island there are the Waiopae Tidepools in Vacationland in lower Puna. My husband says the pools have the best coral on the island (go at high tide) http://www.tropicalsnorkeling.com/bi...ng-kapoho.html
Another area with nice coral and fish is in front of the little village of Ke'ei-which is at the south end of Kealakekua Bay. If you'd like directions (there are no signs), let me know. |
Re Waiopae: I would wade out past the pools and into the deeper water. The fish and coral are very good. The water is much better in the outer reef.
From the old airport in Kailua Kona hike north about .5 miles to Pawai Bay. It is very good in the morning. Very tough when the waves are up. My new favorite place, now that Kona Village Beach is off limits, is the Beach Club Beach at Mauna Lani. Fanatastic snorkeling about 100 yards off the beach. It gets better around the point. Very nice place. Beach 69 hike south on the beach until you see the littly rocky island. Snorkle around that rock. Best early in the morning before the wind. |
Thanks, these are great suggestions.
Martym, thanks for this website, it looks like a good one! |
wbpiii, where do you park for Beach Club Beach?
martym, I found directions to Ke'ei on Shoresnorkeling.com, it looks nice. |
It's on Pauoa Rd across the street from the Mauna Lani Spa. It's about .25 hike.
