Big Island restaurant

Read that the Blue Dragon (up past Kohala area) is temporarily closed but their website doesn't say why. Anyone know anything about it. We loved that place and wanted to recommend it to friends who are going.

Don't know why it's closed, but we just stayed in Puako last February and loved going to the Blue Dragon (3 times). I agree it is a loss for that area, even temporarily. Such a fun place and with good food.

Their calendar says they will reopen Sept. 28, today. I'll be there next week, and will check with my insider sources if it is still closed.

thanks .. Kailani would you report back please. My friends are not going until next year and I think they would really enjoy eating there as we did.

Hi Shar,

We went to the Blue Dragon on Friday night, and it is fully open. I've only been once before, and I enjoy their fresh locally sourced vegetables, pretty, open air environment, and music to dine to.

It is tricky to know about these Big Island restaurants. A great place for fresh pretzels and huge quality sandwiches, Lighthouse Deli and Bar, in Hawi, closed unexpectedly. Another, near the Blue Dragon seems to have also closed and reopened: Plantation Grill.

You can let your friends know there are other choices in the Kawaihae area: people love the burger place across the street in the parking lot, and Café Pesto is good too. The Seafood Bar next door to the Blue Dragon has the best pineapple and macadamia nut coleslaw.

In Hawi, The Bamboo Restaurant and Sushi Rock are also great.

By the way, the owners of the Blue Dragon own an interesting organization in North Kohala closer to Pololu, http://www.iolehawaii.com/ and the New Moon Foundation http://newmoonfoundation.org/

The owner is a Campbell Soup heir, and does lots of great things for the community, which is why they aspire to having healthy and delicious food in a healing environment.
