Big Island- Hapuna Beach Construction!
Just in case you are going to this hotel in the next few months, we just got an email saying that the entire lobby is getting a redo- ok fine, but that the view from the lobby is going to be completely blocked!
We didn;t get any special rate, so this is a total surprise. What a crappy thing to tell guests just a few weeks or days before they are flying to stay at the hotel. This is NOT an emergency repair. Wouldn't you think they should have told us when we booked just a few weeks ago? It wasn't on their website and no one mentioned it on the phone. I'm glad this wasn't a honeymoon or something, but obviously we can't reschedule our flights without penalty. I'm bummed in advance of my trip and I'm posting this is case someone knows someone who is going there who doesn't haunt these boards. Good thing I happened to open the random spam, thinking it was some hotel offer from them. Sorry, I know it's "just" the lobby, but I think they should have clearly mentioned this on the website a month ago if they knew it was starting. Some "vacation!" Aloha! |
Having seen the lobby, my guess is that there is some earthquake retrofitting going on and that they will cover the cracks in the plaster from the prior earthquake.
It's hardly as if you can't get the same view from other parts of the hotel. Chill out and go to the beach, instead. |
I don't really understand why this should ruin your vacation.
|
Once you get down to the pool area and the beach itself, the minor irritation of the lobby construction should disappear.
|
Two restaurants are being closed too.
The agent on the phone said lots of people are cancelling. They wrote about noise. It's hallways, too. I don't need noise on vacation... |
Well that sounds like more than just lobby area construction. If you can't cancel your reservations, I would ask for a room away from the work, as the hotel is quite spread out over a large area.
In all our stays at the Hapuna, we only ate on site at the golf course restaurant for lunch. All our other meals were in Kawaihae or up in Waimea. Better choices and more reasonable for us. Good luck. |
Thank you almost curious george!
Appreciate that idea. We can't cancel, unfortunately. Just wish they had let us know before...we only made the booking in March. Seems a big project like this would have been on the radar screen by then. Thanks again! |
We were staying at the Hyatt Kauai while they were redoing rooms, re-roofing the whole hotel and refurbishing the spa. One of the restuarants was closed and part of the pool had been drained. We had a great stay despite all the crap going on.
|
If it's any consolation, the view from the rooms is really gorgeous. I hope it's not too noisy for you.

I received an e-mail from my booking agent today stating that repairs to the hotel will commence May 1 with a scheduled completion date of July 31. Repairs will be confined to the lobby, 7th floor Reef Lounge, and the 5th floor Ocean Terrace.
The hotel will be offering a $35 daily resort credit per room and a certificate for one nights stay on your next visit as compensation. Harry |
Thanks, Harry, for that detail.
I did not get that "free night" email. But it's kind of like "such terrible food and such small portions." I want the drop dead view not the I will ask about it, although I doubt we are going back! |
Sorry meant to say the drop dead view not the $35.
Thank you also to iamq and volcanogirl and everyone else who offered ideas/empathy. Much appreciated! |
The way that the hotel is situation should mean that most of the rooms will be far from the work. The hotel spreads low and wide to the north from the lobby/restaurant area.
