Big Island: Four Seasons Hualalai or Fairmont Orchid??
I currently have the 4S booked, but am reading a lot of nice information on the Orchid. Is the 4S worth the $400 a night more??

Depends.
These would be the things that would make me pay $400 more for a room:
1. Once-in-a-lifetime special occasion- like Honeymoon, family reunion?
2. Can you actually afford it?
3. Do you spend time in the hotel and grounds or do you usually get up and do activities?
For me $400 a night is a great deal of money. For example, I once flew first class to Hawaii. It was wonderful. But honestly, it wasn't worth $1500 more. I don't remember that much of it. Especially once I landed

Type in Fairmont Orchid to find my opinion about our stay there under the Hawaii topics. I wouldn't return. It was not a good experience. We stayed there for our 25th Anniversary.Besides visiting the beachfront restaurant, I would not stay there.

If you are going to spend your time on the resort, then yes. It is absolutely wonderful.
If you are going to be out and about a lot, consider staying elsewhere for part of the trip and then moving over to the 4S.
I spent 7 days at the Hilton and did my sightseeing then, and moved down the road to the 4S for a fantastic stay - and never left the resort grounds. It was wonderful!
