need cheap motel, kahului, one night, car rental

Looking for a cheap hotel/motel in Kahului in late July for one night. Know about the Maui Beach Hotel ($269 not cheap) and Maui Seaside Hotel ($140). Those can't be the only two hotels in Kahului, right?

We are a family of 4 and arrive late at night....just need 2 beds to crash until we pick up rental car the next day and proceed to our condo for the rest of the visit.

Also, does anyone have any inside info on car rental agencies AWAY from the airport that might be cheaper?

Thank you!

Stephanie

Many of us arrive OGG late. We drive on to our condos that night. I stop at the Safeway enroute to ours for something for a late snack and breakfast the next day. It's only 20 minutes from the airport to our place in South Kihei; would be well under an hour to Kaanapali -- a bit more to Napili or Kapalua.

There are off-airport rentals, but you'd have to get TO one while the place is open. I think Fred's will come and get you at the airport.

You have the two cheapies. There's also Courtyard By Marriott, across from Costco. Paia Inn?

Yes, that's true that many arrive late, but no need to spend hundreds of dollars on a condo so late at night, right? We have other logistics that speak to staying in Kahului that night as well.

Are there ANY other hotels in Kahului, other than those two and the Marriott?

Do you have a website for "Fred's?" can't find in on a search.

Thank you so much!

The three hotels mentioned ARE the only ones. There are a couple of B/B type inns in Wailuku, but those are going to be out of you budget.

Maui Beach and Maui Seaside (both adequate) are showing rates of $115 and $139 per night for various weeknights in late July on hotels.com/ expedia.com/ and priceline.com.

Well...we all have our priorities. I just want to start feeling like I am on vacation -- want to get out of the airport and Kahului, unpack and relax. You probably can't check into your condo before 3 p.m. the next day. You'll spend *something* eating 'out' for dinner, breakfast and lunch until then. (Don't park on the street with a trunk full of luggage.)

Now *I* can't find the number for Fred's. Google Auto Rentals on Maui. There are some off-airport. Some rent older cars. There's also Enterprise.

What's wrong with a taxi? It's only a 2-3 mile ride from the airport.

Try googling Frank's instead of Fred's.

But you only have to do it once. Sorry.

I would drive to the condo right away, otherwise the next day could be partially wasted. I would want to wake up next morning in my condo not in a cheap crash out place in Maui. There won't be much saving in the end.

Thanks for all the input. We got it figured out now. Like I said, we need to stay in Kahului the first night and it is significantly cheaper.

Steph,
Try Expedia & Travelocity for a car/hotel package, you can combine for different number of days. I think you can find a hotel room in kihei and rental from a good rental agancy for the same price or less of your attempt a la carte

Have a great trip. Try Hotwire for rental cars.

Try this website for car rental http://www.discounthawaiicarrental.com/

And if you are a Costco member, try their website--I sometimes get good deals there.

Check Costco travel for hotel and or car rental if you are a member of Costco. They waive the mandatory fee ($10-12 a day extra) for additional driver. We have used them any times. Not sure about cheap hotels though but car rentals are very very reasonable......

I'll second www.discounthawaiicarrental.com We got a very good rate with them both on Oahu and Maui, and they didn't charge more for an extra driver. For us, Costco was more expensive, but do check there as well if you're a member.
