BIG change in Southwest Rapid Rewards 3/1/11

No more 1 credit per paid flight, it is now going to be based on points earned and then you use those points to get Reward Tickets.

Each type of ticket purchased earns points at a different rate:
Business Fare earns 2600 points per dollar spent
Anytime earns 2000 points per dollar spent
Wanna Getaway earns 600 per dollar spent.

To Redeem:
Business Fare costs 120 points per dollar of fare
Anytime Fare costs 100 points per dollar of fare
Wanna Getaway costs 60 points per dollar of fare.

If you have Chase Southwest card, you earn points - 1 point per $1 spent on non Southwest fares, 2 points for $1 for Southwest fares bought with card.

Points can be used for international travel if you have Chase SWA credit card.

Sorry - Wrong "earning" numbers in the above post. Correct numbers are:

Each type of ticket purchased earns points at a different rate:
Business Fare earns 12 points per dollar spent
Anytime earns 10 points per dollar spent
Wanna Getaway earns 6 per dollar spent.

Just a slight difference.

So a wanna bugger off fare of $121 per leg costs 7260 points, or 14520 for round trip -- that's still fewer "points" (aka miles) than a cheap AA reward fare on an equivalent flight. Like last year, when we got a cheapo AA reward for 17,500 RT from DFW to ABQ.

Not too bad.

Deb, how do you understand it to be useful for international flights?

You have to use a Chase Southwest Visa to get international flights, there are no specifics yet:

from the southwest website:
"Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers can now redeem points for International flights, cruises, hotel stays, and more"

and
"The changeover from credits to points in the new program will affect Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers. Chase will send a separate communication detailing the specific changes."

Points don't expire which is a plus, but will now take you years to earn a freebie if you generally purchase their lowest fares.
