BI hotel - walking distance to town?

My friend and I are going to be on the Big Island (Kona) for 2 days and would like to stay at a nice hotel that is walking distance to town. After reading the posted reviews, it seems as though all of the centrally located accommodations are shabby and rundown. Do you think our best bet would be to stay at the Sheraton and just take a taxi into/out of town? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hopefully someone will have some suggestions.

I would be interested in even hearing about the shabby and rundown places! Seriously, the most important thing for me is being walking distance to something to do, not isolated.

I have found this in Lahaina/Maui and Waikiki/Oahu but haven't nothing similar on Kauai or Big Island... and walking to a town is a must.

I realize that - the first time I did not specify Hawaii as the topic and could not go back and change it. Are you the monitor?

Your best bet is to rent a car.
