I don't know what is wrong with this forum site but it did not post my original question when I composed this new message. ANYWAY!
Any suggestion of which moving companies to use or stay away from? (Moving from MD to NC - about 500 miles). Any moving tips? Thank you.

fran,

all moving companies (I am talking the majors) are the same and I have moved several times long distance. We always had the movers do everything, pack, etc. If they pack they are liable for damage. Photograph everything before to prove the condition of your things and check it all as it comes off the truck. I think sometimes they do minor repairs in the van to mask damage. It is helpful to have someone with you on packing days or moving days to keep an eye on them. Make sure all the cartons are marked well with contents inside. I would be especially concerned with small valuable items, as they tend to walk off. I "lost" about 10 sterling silver picture frames my last move.

Good luck.

If you live in a high-rise building, beware of stuff disappearing on the freight elevator when you move either in or out. We hired a "big-name" company to pack and move us only to have a complete set of patio furniture "disappear" that way. Someone stopped the elevator and removed the steel chairs and table on its way down from the 15th floor. Since we had reserved the elevator for three hours and furnished the movers with the pass key, we can only suspect that they had a confederate steal our stuff. They would not pay for this mysterious disappearance, either. Lucky for us, we had a special insurance policy for the move. I suspect they knew this and acted accordingly.
There is only one reliable mover.....it's called yourself. You pack it all along with your family. Then you rent a U-haul and on moving day get friends and neighbors to help load. Then you drive it and hire neighbor kids to help unload. Works well. We just did it 3 days ago and moved the whole contents of a large 4 bedroom house over 700 miles. It's tiring but well worth it and saved a HUGE amount of money.
