Anyone have any comments regarding this hotel on 7th? I have a car and the free parking interests me. Hotel looks OK on their website. I'm not looking for shopping/dining just relatively easy access to the Moscone Center.

This is not easy access to Moscone Center because you do NOT want to walk to Moscone Center from here. To get to Moscone, you have to walk past 6th street and trust me--you do not want to do that on purpose! Ever!

As one of the folks who has been accused of being a shameless SF supporter, I have only 3 words: No, No and No.

6th and 7th street suck, even in the 9th Circuit Court IS on 7th, don't stay there.

there are plenty of parking lots where you can get an early bird special for like 12 dollars a day.

Use priceline or Hotwire to get a much nicer room in a in less disgustingly sketchy 4 block area of the city.

I agree - 7th is a bad area, and you don't want to walk from there to Moscone. Or anywhere for that matter.

How are you defining bad?

Bad=not safe.

Skid row. 6th street is scary even in broad daylight. There is one restaurant I will go into the area for (like most San Franciscans I'll go anywhere for a great meal ;)) but otherwise it is an area to avoid. High crime, lots of drug use (selling, buying, etc) and questionable characters.

Another vote for NOT staying in that area. Everyone's assesment that this is a bad area is right on target. I've walked through this area in broad daylight and been uncomfortable and I am not the nervous type. There are halfway houses, hotels that rent by the hour, seedy bars, and so on.

Best Western often has decent hotels in terrible neighborhoods. Too bad the AAA guides just rate the hotels and not the surroundings.

Hotels with parking that I know: (the first is near Fisherman's Wharf, the 2nd is 3 miles outside the city but a real bargain...)

Again, bad location. Really.

Appreciate all the help and saving me. Decided to park at the public lot Mission & 5th and find somthing else in the area. Where would you stay in the low $100 range? The Pickwick, Powell, Milano, and Hotel Union Square look to be close by in my price range.

Would Priceline work for you? If so, you can get great deals on hotels in SF. Try Union Square East.

Also look at South of Market (SOMA). This includes the hotels right around Moscone Center. Go to biddingfortravel.com and look at the San Francisco Hotel list. It will tell you some of the hotels in each area and their star rating.

I'm so glad I saw your question because I stayed at the BW Americania and hated it. The location is terrible. One of the worst lodging mistakes I ever made.

Agree that your best bet would be Priceline. You can probably find a 3 or 4 star hotel for well under $100. I was able to get the Hyatt Regency for $50 a night in April. If Priceline is not your thing, I also agree with the suggestion of the Columbus Inn. It offers reasonable prices, free parking and has a really great location right on the edge of Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach.

Dave I would also point out that you do not have to stay close to the Moscone Center to have easy access to it. Bus, Bart, Cable Car and walking are all possibilities...the tourist area of San Fran from Fisherman's Wharf to Market is not very big or burdensome.
