Best value Indian restaurant
We're headed for NYC Labor Day weekend and need recommendations for Indian restaurants in Midtown.

Hi Libby Ann. You can't go wrong with great, inexpensive Indian food on East 6th Street downtown. I like Mitali best.

However, since you asked for midtown, try Utsav on 55th Street. I think it's not very well known but it should be -- food is heavenly! Not cheap though, so don't expect a bargain, but you get what you pay for. I love that place. There's also Nirvana, which is a penthouse restaurant on Central Park South and IMO, totally overrated. The best thing about that place is the gorgeous, dream-like fantasy interior, and the spectacular view of the park, BUT the food is outrageously overpriced and nothing special. If you want just-OK Indian in a sublime setting, go there. But if you want seriously delish food go to Utsav. Enjoy your trip!

We liked Clay Pot on Restaurant Row. I'm thinking it's on 46th between 8th and 9th.

Have fun!

oh, go down to 6th street in the east village. you won't forget it! there's a theory in NYC that these restaurants all share the same kitchen. The food is not super high quality, but most offer an atmosphere to remember. a cult favorite among locals is Milon - it's on First Avenue between 5th and 6th street.

my favorite place is royal indian cuisine on 1st avenue btwn 5th & 6th strs - is the restaurant down the stairs. they have a garden in the back outside, that is decorated similar to the inside (fun, tacky). but really, any of the restaurants on little india are good. http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/7087542/
also check out citysearch.com for NYC restarants.
