Best US tourist city?
What do you feel is either the best, or some of the best cities in the U.S. for a tourist to visit?
Before you reply, try to consider the wide array of features that the city offers:.. things like: convienence, is the city easily accessible?, low traffic congestion?, low crime rate? attractions? various lodging options? does it offer light rail service or some other similiar form of transportation? is it scenic? tourist friendly? etc, etc be sure to indicate why you feel the city is the best. |

best for whom? Where is this person coming from and for how long?
My personal favorites are San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City -- by far, and not necessarily in that order. But if I were a person who lived in a big city, perhaps my favorite would be something much smaller and more "scenic" rather than so urban and cosmopolitan. |

2. NYC 3. Washington DC (Spring and Fall) All have efficient public transportation, no need to rent a car. All have a myriad of activities, nightlife, lodging options, outdoor activities, great shopping, history/museums, shows, culture, diverse neighborhoods, and natural scenic beauty. Accessible from air/rail. Hard to pick just one. Come to think of it, I'd add Seattle to the list. DC is so beautiful in Spring with the Cherry Blossoms, no place else like it. SF with the bay bridge, fog rolling in, so scenic. NYC - if I had to pick just one. |

wow that's a loaded question. Well NYC has alot of culture and shopping very exciting. But when it comes to traffic and crime that's another story. My favorite us city is definitely miami. Great hotels, weather, shopping, all around great experience every time i go. Best under rated city is Newport RI beautiful beaches, breath taking mansions, shopping a food. If u have kids definitely orlando or san diego

flep, while I love Miami, the crime rate and traffic there is ten times what it is in NYC.

well let me stand correct then, you may have a valid point, parts of miami may be worse than nyc for sure but at least in miami there aren't homeless people begging for cash as u walk into a high end boutique. And i definitely don't think miami has more traffic, driving in nyc is a total suicide mission. Both cities are great.

Agree - New York.
It has something for everyone and incredibly rich experiences for almost everyone. (And traffic isn't an issue if you act like a city dweller - walk and take the subway). After that I like San Francisco DC Boston Orlando and Las Vegas are not cities - they're theme parks (unreality to the umpteenth degree). And LA isn't a city either - I don;t know what it is - but it's not a city. |

In over 45 years of travel, I've visited probably every major city in the U.S. (okay, honesty forces me to admit I've never been to Orlando, believe it or not).
For me, New York is indisputably the best city for tourists to visit. Expensive, frantic, crowded, loud, unfriendly residents, bad traffic, homeless and crime problems -- but something for every taste, and usually the best available. Best museums, best entertainment, best nightlife, best food, best art, best shopping. And I'll add something hard to quantify, but I think anyone who's visited will agree: NYC pulsates with more energetic swagger than any other city. From the multi-billionaires deciding which skyscrapers to buy to the buskers trying to get $5, everyone encapsulates the words, "If I can make it here I can make ANYWHERE." When you walk the streets, catching this vibe can't help but lift your energy to a new level. |
I have to agree with pretty much everyone. NYC is an amazing city for a tourist.
1. New York City 2. San Francisco 3. Washington DC 4. Boston Los Angeles has a lot to see and do, but the tourist sights are very spread out and hard to navigate using public transportation. Washington DC, otoh, has a very compact tourist area around the Mall that gives a tourist a large number of museums and monuments in a small area. |
The only drawback to New York is that the size and crowds could be a little bit daunting to someone not used to major cities. I love San Francisco and Chicago (the latter especially in the summer).
