thanks for the update. that sounds great! i'm hoping to get to Waikiki myself Jan/Feb.

i think it's good to research options for restaurants and activities, but you could go in with no planning at all and still put together a fun trip just deciding after you arrive or even going day by day (for most things). there's loads of coupons and offers. i particularly like 'Oahu Gold' (has the best map of central Waikik) and '101 Things to Do' brochures.

We stayed at the Ali Towers a few years ago and thought it was a very nice hotel and property. I think the Hawaii Hiltons are some of Hilton's best hotel properties. The one on the big island is huge.
Ali tower is definitely the best tower. You can walk to many things from there.

I stayed at the Halekulani many years ago (about 17). It was a beautiful hotel, but small grounds and small pool. I think your kids will be happier at the Hilton.

Gordonsummer,

We stayed at the Ali'i Tower at The Hilton Hawaiian Village two years ago, and while it was definitely an upgrade from the other rooms at The Hilton, the "private" pool was overcrowded, and the beach area didn't thrill us.

Last year, for about half the money we spent on two rooms at the Ali'i Tower, we took a chance and stayed at The Aston Waikiki Beach Tower. We had an absolutely GORGEOUS two-bedroom apartment, with a redone kitchen, big living room with flat screen TV, pull-out couch, two brand new bathrooms, washer/dryer, wonderful terrace with killer view of Waikiki Beach/Diamond Head for about $400/night! Granted, I found a "special" online that year, but I still think their rates are considerably lower for four/five people than most of the hotels that are right on the beach.

There is a pool at the complex ( I think it's on the third floor), but we never used it, since it was so easy to cross the street to the beach.

This location puts you in the heart of Waikiki, with restaurants, shops, and the zoo a short walk away. We have also stayed in the recent past at both of The Outriggers, but if and when we get a chance to go back to Honolulu, we'll be staying again at The Aston Beach Tower.

My only note of warning is if you decide to book there, make sure you book a renovated apartment, since when we visited, some of them were in the process of being redone. Also ask for an apartment about the 6th floor, or you will be subject to the constant whir of a huge air conditioning unit on the building next to the Aston, and the view won't be nearly as good.

We had such a good visit there and saved so much $$, that we are trying to put together miles for another trip back next year. Our kids ( 22 and 19) loved it!
