Just to add on to the above few posts -- if your travel dates are at all flexible (meaning it wouldn't be the end of the world if you had to postpone for a week or two) you can find amazing deals on Mexico/Caribbean during the summer. We did Mexico in July -- $750 per person including airfare for seven nights all-inclusive. The following year we did Aruba in October -- $1800 for two people including airfare, seven nights at the Radisson, and food. Lucked out with perfect weather both times, knock on wood! The earlier in hurricane season you go, or the further south you go, the less likely you'll run into a nasty storm.

Perhaps Costa Rica? We had tickets to CR (from CLT) this past summer that we purchased for around $300 per person during an airfare sale. I think it's lower peak season. Prices seem relatively reasonable once you get there, depending on what you want to do.
Any place in central America may be doable depending on the price of the flight. Someone above mentioned Buenos Aires but every time I price a flight to BA the airfare is well over $1100 per person. Too bad because I would love to visit! Tracy |

Does anyone know of a site like Jim Flynn's Best Weekends that isn't solely focused on the East Coast?

OK then I stand corrected, but please note that those occurances were in the fall. These people want to travel in summer. So while "plan at your own risk" may be a more valid statement than I realized, it has nothing to do with this question.

Holbox Mexico at the end of July, start of August and snorkel with the whale sharks. Yes, that is completely safe because the whale sharks filter plankton, they are not carnivorous. For added beauty, I'd stay at a hotel on the beach, which I did not.
Here's my report. http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=35091608 That's not even a long flight for you. Good luck to you! |

The Puerto Vallarta site mentions seven major hurricanes in 12 years. That's far from a guaranteed hit. Obviously anywhere in the hurricane belt is "plan at your own risk" between July and November, but your actual chances are pretty slim of your specific destination getting hit during the one week you're there. It's a minimal risk -- but not everyone can deal with it, which is why the rest of us get cheap rates during that season! ((#))

It's really silly using PV as the hurricane example for Mexico. If you want to be scared off look at CANCUN and the Yucatan peninsula. THAT's where the hurricanes hit most often.
