Best travel time from Washington, D.C. to Williamsburg, VA
We'll be visiting Washington, D.C. next week and we plan on driving from it on Sunday morning to Williamsburg, VA, and than back to Washington D.C. on Tuesday morning. I imagine the traffic is horrific. Any suggestions as to the best time to travel?

Going down early on Sunday AM should not be too bad for traffic. Do consider taking route 5 along the river from near Richmond down, it is much prettier than the hwy and usually little traffic, plantations to visit, historic homes along the way. Going into the city on any morning has to be horrible. Good luck

Sunday morning should be good anytime.
Tuesday morning is a bit more congested. If you left around 9 am, you should miss most of the congestion around Richmond, and arrive in Washington after the main morning rush.

Listen to WTOP radio 103.5 fm for traffic reports on the "8s" of every hour. I agree with gb944 about leaving times.
Also, do check your maps as there secondary roads to use as alternatives should 95 have problems. Once the commuter times are past, road construction crews begin so you can get caught in those.

Great!!! That means I should be good leaving after breakfast from Washington DC.
I am considering staying here at The Westin Washington, D.C. City Center , 1400 M Street NW Washington, District of Columbia 20005.
Is the location safe?
Will it be easy to get to the National Archives and the Library of Congress. We are just doing a few things we missed the last time we were in DC.

Location is fine though not particularly exciting re fun little restaurants, though there are some heading up 14th street from Thomas Circle. You are about 3 1/2 blocks from the McPherson Square metro stop on the orange/blue line.
The Westin (under a previous hotel name) is infamous for being the site of our former mayor's arrest for drug possession.
