Best town and hotel to visit the Finger Lakes area

Were visiting the Finger Lakes area of New York State in September. Any advice on the best town to stay in that is close to all the scenic attractions. How about advice on a motel or hotel?

Interesting: I put in a traditional question no response. Troll post (they say) 1000 plus responses!

Great towns to visit ... Skaneateles, Watkins Glen, Hammondsport, and Ithaca. For accomodations, I'd try Skaneateles, but you'll need to make reservations soon if it's for a weekend. Look into the Sherwood Inn. If you want to go very nice and deluxe (although very expensive, look into the Mirbeau Inn& Spa.) There are also some other nice B&B's in the area, but can't remember their names. If you do a search on this site for Skaneateles there should be quite a bit of information.

Travdis:

Why no responses? I'd say either because you didn't list this question under New York, or your question is too general. What type of attractions do you like? Wine tasting and hiking is what I think of when I think of the Finger Lakes, but others would say lake recreation, fishing, and NASCAR at the Glen. Also the area is pretty large, and since there are no way across the lakes (only driving around them), people tend to stay at and around a particular lake or two.

That being said, out last trip we stayed in Ovid, at the Silver Strand B&B, which we loved. Nice house right on Cayuga lake, a great breakfast, helpful hosts, and within walking distance of a good winery with an out door cafe for dinner: Sheldrake Point Vineyard. (Walking distance, so no worries about drinking and driving!)

Watkins Glen was about half an hour drive, and there was another good state park with a very high waterfall to hike to, but the name escapes me.

Ovid itself had no real town, but thats fine for us. If you want a quaint town, try Skaneateles. If you want honky tonk, try Watkins Glen. If you want a small Ivy League city, try Ithaca.

Its a beatiful area, so I'm sure you will find what you are looking for!

Without knowing the price range you're talking of I'll mention that we toured up the east side of Lake Seneca from Watkins Glen enjoying wineries the entire day. That evening we stayed in Geneva and a pretty nice Ramada Inn right on the lake and had dinner in town. There's a beautiful college there and we visited it also. The next morning we headed down the west side of the lake again enjoying the many wineries. That afternoon we visited the attractions at Watkins Glen.
Enjoy

I grew up in the Finger Lakes region.Although I've been away for oh 30 years, I have fond memories of "going to the Lake". We went to Keuka Lake where Taylor Wine is made.Penn Yan is the closest town. Sometimes we'd stay at the Vikings Hotel which is right on the lake. It makes a huge difference to be on the lake or accross the street. I would only do one of the two. I don't know if it's there anymore. It was nice then for families having kitchenettes. Senaca Lake is nearby. Both are absolutly beautiful. Cayuga Lake is in Ithica, also home to Cornell U. These places are very popular in the summer. Good luck with reservations.

travdis -- type "finger lakes" and you will see a lot of recent advice given on where to stay, activities, web-sites, etc. You will see many of my responses to similar questions. Please post back with detailed questions and I'm sure you'll get responses.

Also, while I know what its like waiting for a response (you want one QUICK!), you only gave fodorites 6 hours before reposting. Considering this is not a major city/destination in the US, you might want to give a bit more time to allow people to reply (especially since you posted this during the work day)...just my opinion.
