Best time to hike in Guadalupe Mountains NP?

I am planning my first post-retirement hiking trip for next April. I thought that April would be a great time to hike in Guadalupe Mountains NP, but now I'm reading about high winds and I'm not so sure.

What is the best time of year to hike in GMNP?

I have no experience with this park, but windy conditions are not uncommon in the Southwestern US.

I have no experience with this park, but I'd be worried about windy condition during the coldest months when temparatures at high elevation could fall well below freezing. In April you would not have that concern. If unexpected cold wet weather is forecast then you can stick to lower elevations.
