Best time of year to visit Arizona

We'd like to plan a trip to Arizona next year. Since we've never been there, I'm looking for recommendations on where to stay in the area of the Grand Canyon. We don't mind a drive of one or two hours to get there. I'm thinking April/May before the hot weather hits the region? Any help would be appreciated!

May would probably be better, but it seldom gets hot at the Grand Canyon. Temperatures in the upper 80's would be considered hot.

Definitely arrive before school lets out and an extra couple 1,000 tourists arrive. Before the heat is good, too. You're on target. Don't forget the painted desert and petrified forest, OK?

You can find accomodations on the S. Rim, in Flagstaff or Williams, and probably all points in between. It all depends on what type of accomodations you're looking for, and what your price range is. Do a google search for lodging in the area.

We really enjoyed our visit in early October one year. Great weather and no crowds.

You might not mind driving an hour or so, but I highly recommend staying near the South Rim so you can enjoy sunrise and sunset at the canyon.

My friend was SO SORRY that they stayed near Williams the year the went because of all the driving back and forth.

I would recommend staying in Grand Canyon village which has a variety of accomodations. Or if you stay outside the Canon, I'd say in Tusayen which is about 5-10 miles south. Flagstaff is nice but is way too far to use as a base to see the Canyon especially if you are spending more than 1 day thee. Williams is also too far. I fail to see why people go to Williams (except for the train). May along with Sept-Oct are great months. Even if you are not a hiker, take a stroll down Bright Angel trail for however long you want to get a feel/view of the Canyon from below the rim.
