Recommendations for Things to Do Near Orlando, Florida
I'm planning a trip to Orlando, Florida, and while I'm excited to visit the main attractions like Disney World and Universal Studios, I'd love to explore more of what the area has to offer. Can anyone recommend some interesting things to do or places to visit that are within a short drive from Orlando? We're open to all kinds of activities, including nature spots, historical sites, unique local attractions, and great dining options.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions! |

Just 50 minurtes north is Deland. Called the Athens of Florida because of Stetson University, Florida’s oldest private university, this Old Florida town has much to offer. The downtown is lively. The Stetson Mansion is the most popular tourist destination in the Sunshine State according to TripAdvisor. The Lonely Planet Guide to Florida (2009) says this about Deland:
“The quaint, walkable Woodland Blvd...is home to independent shops and restaurants—modern yet thoroughly small-town. Ancient oaks lean to hug each other over city streets and Spanish moss dribbles from their branches. This is Old Town Florida, and it feels so cozy.” www.traillink.com says, "20 miles west of Orlando, the South Lake Trail (also known as Lake Minneola Scenic Trail) takes in some of central Florida's most spectacular prospects. Nowhere in this region will you find more hills, lakes and wide-open vistas than along this 15.5-mile paved trail. The trail is also part of a larger network called the Coast-to-Coast Connector, which will stretch across central Florida from St. Petersburg to Cape Canaveral."The trail starts in West Orange where you can rent bikes. |
The Springs of Central Florida is one of the most stunning areas of the US. Juniper Spring is the most beautiful, Salt Spring has the best snorkeling, Blue Spring Stae Park for the swimming, Wekiva for the canoeing, Rock Spring at Kelly Park for the tubeing. Alexander is the most natural, and Deleon the most historic (there is an old grist mill and a pancake house where you can make your own pancakes from the wheat.) The springs are an invigorating swim, as they remain a constant 72 degrees year round, which is cold water swimming.
https://floridasprings.org/ In Winter Park, the Morse Museum features an unequaled collection of Tiffany glass, including some installation pieces salvaged from the Tiffany home in New York after it burned down. Eatonville is the first incorporated African American community in the US. Famous for its favorite daughter, Zora Neale Hurston. It is a very humble place where you can take a self-guided walking tour. Brochures at the community/art center. You can rent a small motor boat from a fish camp near Deland and travel up twisting rivers and lakes. https://www.highlandparkfishcamp.com/ |
Seaworld is the best imo. Lines at disney are crazy. Universal is okay but kids might not get all the movie references. I like the roller coasters and animals at seaworld. They also have the sesame place which my kids love.
