It is very hard to choose just one thing in each category, but you were very specific about asking for only ONE. So...
In my opinion, the best thing about New York City is the vast array of options available in every category at any given time -- the variety is such that it is the only place I know of where you can get/see/eat/do almost anything you want, virtually anytime.
For me, the worst thing about New York is the assault on the senses that results from the same abundance of options -- e.g. the constant commercialism in the form of advertisements almost everywhere you look, the smell of garbage, the barrage of noise in the form car horns and jackhammers -- I get sensory overload everytime I go, which takes a physical and emotional and spiritual toll.

The best thing about New York is Broadway, and the fact that you can get affordable tickets at the half price booth in Times Square. The worst thing is the cost of lodging, but we just got a great deal for Thanksgiving on priceline.com. If you try it, start your bidding low! Mary
