Best steak in Boston?

What is your opinion as to the best place to go for steak in Boston? I hear all the names, Abe & Louies, Flemings, Ruth Chris, Morton's, Capital Grill and Smith & Wollensky.

We've been to Smith & Wollensky and want to try something different. So ambiance doesn't particularly matter; what we care about is the best steak, period.

Whenever we've gone elsewhere, we've always wished we had just gone to Abe & Louie's.

Ah, Abe & Louie's with creamed spinach and mushrooms on the side. Not to mention a delicious Southern Comfort Manhattan in an ice cold container to start. Yum.

Last time I was at Abe and Louis was for brunch. Craving a Bloody Mary and more formal brunch. It was rather dissappointing even thought the place was jammed. The steak and eggs was miserable, which says a lot for a steak house.

Friends go time and time again to Grill 23 and love it.

But then I'm the kinda gal that loves to hit the butcher, get the best available and hang at home with a kickass bottle of red and my own twice baked potato and salad.

Grill 23 is really good - but a bit of a 'scene' (as much as Boston has a scene) - I've been there probably 7 or 8 times and once sat next to Nathan Lane and on another occasion Andy Pettitte - There's a new Mortons open down by the water by the federal courthouse - and I went to MOO about 3 months ago and it was AMAZING - but really really expensive with an obnoxious wine list.

Glad to hear MOO was amazing! I have a $100 gift certificate to KO Prime - that should get me thru apps and a cocktail!!! Although I could spend it all on tuna!

This is great input. I never heard of MOO but just looked it up.

With these suggestions, given ambiance, the scene or location really doesn't matter, Is Grill 23 or Abe & Louis the best for the steak?

I live in Boston and have been to Capital Grill, Abe and Louies and Grill 23 several times.

My husband and I just had a discussion about this yesterday and we have decided that Grill 23 is the best followed by Abe and Louie's.

I like Grill 23 best, and you might as well try it since its the only one of those mentioned that is not a chain. It also has perhaps the best wine list in town.

I also liked Grill 23 the one time I went there and was able to afford it (burning a $100 gift certificate!)

Grill 23 or The Oak Room are the best high-end steak places locally. Bring plenty of money and wear your classy duds.

Juldie, all the names you seem to be "hearing" in your post are chains. They wouldn't be my first choice, but if you utterly must do a chain, your best options locally are probably Capital Grille, The Palm, or Abe & Louie's.

Thank you for the suggestions. I definitely want to try Grill 23 sometime. bachslunch, it's not that I am interested in a chain it's just those are the steak restaurants I have heard of.
