Best speed trap in the US
 

My vote is for Broward County FL. While passing through, I was stopped and asked for my proof of insurance. I pulled out my card, but it happened to be last years card. I told the officer I DID have insurance, just failed to put the new card in. He said not to worry, it was only a $5.00 fine if I sent in the proof of insurance with the ticket. When I got home, I sent in the proof and the 5 bucks. Today I got a notice from Broward County saying I owe $39.00 more. When I called them, they pointed out that the $5.00 fine was only if I paid the fine on or BEOFRE the date of ticket. Not possible says I, but low and behold, the paper they gave me with the ticket, DOES say you must pay the ticket on or BEFORE the date on the ticket. The only date on the ticket is the issue date. Congrats to Broward County!

Louisiana must come in a close second. I understand that if you have a nice car, they just seize it and think up charges later.

We were pretty impressed when the Florida State trooper just stepped out onto the highway to flag us down,after the AIRPLANE!!! had nailed us for going 90 in the 65 mile zone.<BR>At least he was polite while he wrote the ticket.:O)

Just for the name: "Ono, PA" -- I believe it's on I-81.

West Yellowstone Montana to Idaho Falls.

Kingman, AZ between Phoenix and Las Vegas. I do not know anyone who has taken that drive and not been ticketed. Speed limit goes from 70 to 35 in a quarter of a mile and there are the troopers with their radar guns out.

U.S. 1 from Homestead to Key West Florida.

Yup, I love the ones where speeders are clocked via an airplane and rounded up a few miles down the road.

101 in California just south of Salinas to around King City. I think they have a CHP training station somewhere near there, but boy do they patrol!

Nothing is more amusing than to see the arrogant slobs - with their CB's and radar detectors, using the highway like a speedway and forcing folks to move out of their way by driving an inch from their rear bumpersetc. - rounded up when they've been clocked from the air! I just love when that happens. It's a little sad, though, when you see the omnipotents in their SUV's off the road due to driving in snow and ice and though the roads were bare.

One of the worst was out here in Hawaii with the photovans. Contracted, non-law enforcement trained fools (some even had criminal records) automatically giving out tickets for even a few mph over the limit. Speed was scanned then matched up with your front plate, ticket mailed later (by non-certified mail, another violation of the law). They wanted to give as many tickets regardless of the situation since they were paid a set fee for each ticket issued. Everyone was targetted from personal cars, trucks, ambulances with their lights flashing, HPD, state sheriffs, government vehicles, firetrucks, you name it. It was a huge scam, focusing on the elderly, poor, and tourists, those who were unable due to financial or time reasons to fight it. Fortunately, new laws were passed to outlaw photo tickets out here, although on the last day of the program they were giving out thousands of tickets for even 1mph over the limit violations.

Yes, please drive your Lexus to Louisiana! I will write you a totally unfair ticket and figure out a way to "appropriate" your car. No one will notice. Then I will go back to my comfy office (ill-gotten money, of course) and "think up" charges.<BR><BR>Please. You shouldn't believe everything you hear on TV!

The best I've seen is in a little town in Texas called La Jolla. I was stopped there and fined for going 2 miles above the speed limit of 30mph.<BR><BR>What I do hate about US highways are people driving with the cruise control on and who will not turn it off under any circumstances. One time I was driving along I-10 (somewhere in Louisiana) behind two other cars. I think that both of them had cruise control. The one in the front was going at 70, the one behind him at 70.00001 mph. This guy took 10 minutes to overpass.

There's a difference between speed traps designed for municipal revenue enhancement (e.g., soak some money out of the transients) and those designed to harvest the Endangering Species of roadjerks. <BR><BR>Just by accident one day, I managed to fend off one of you flying tigers who was trying to drive up my trunk because I was driving only 7 MPH over the speedlimit on a 2-lane road. My son happened to have a videocam next to him on the seat and I told him to turn around and "film" the driver behind us. He slammed on his brakes and backed off good until I pulled over at the next opportunity to let him put miles between us. I also "filmed" his angry, fatheaded face as he drove by.<BR><BR>My own name for those of you who think Dale Earnhart went the way you want to go -- taking a bunch of other citizen drivers with you -- is S.L.E. Short Life Expectancy. Then there's S.L.E. with R. R. (yeah, road rage).<BR><BR>I'm all in favor of "outing" the money-trap speed traps here because it's a sleezy way for a town to make money. But I don't think Maxie's attitude is wrong, either.

Next to Iowa City, IA (home of U of Iowa) is a small town called Coralville. There is a cop there who is famous for generating revenue from a speed trap where the speed limit is 25. He'll get you for doing 25.5mph. When I used to drive through there, I'd set my cruise at 22 just to get by that bastard.

A friend of mine left Atlanta PD to go to Gulfport, MS. He said they give a vacation each year to the cop who hands out the most tickets. My friend targets out of state tags, because they won't come back to town to go to court. They just pay.

Littlestown, PA (near Gettysburg). Town police love to get the "speeding" tourists...25 mph and the fines are in the $150 range (depends on your specific speed). If traveling thru, beware.
