Best snowmobiling area in Michigan?
Thinking about a weekend away in January in the lower UP to do some snowmobiling and maybe downhill skiing. Any good suggestions on places with close access to snowmobile trails? We are traveling with kids, so a place with an indoor pool would also be a plus.

hi faye,
don't know if this comes too late for planning, but definitely ironwood! it's in the southwestern part of the u.p. just north of the wisconsin border. there's tons of trails, some of the best ones go north to lake superior. there's also skiing at indianhead mountain, not too far away. i think the americinn is right off the trail and i think they have a pool. cloverland motors on the main drag is where i've rented snowmobiles. e-mail me if you need more info. my bf goes up there regularly. tina |
Mackinaw City has good trails starting from right in town, as well as the Straits of Mackinac Shoreline. Snowmobiles are permitted on most streets, though not late at night.
Most of the businesses are closed, but there are still a few restaurants (no one will blink when you go in to eat in your snowmobile clothes) and the motels that are still open are MUCH cheaper than summer. There are several weekends with special events - sled dog races, the Fort open in winter, ice sculptures, ice fishing contests, etc. For downhill, the nearest places are about 30 miles away. Cross COuntry skiing away from the snowmobiles is available at the Headlands at the west side of the city and in nearby Wilderness State Park. Keith |
Gaylord is a pretty good place. It is also within striking distance for many other winter activities also. Check under Gaylord Chamber of commerce. Oh, it is in the upper part of the lower.

Faye; If you want the BEST snowmobiling in th US it is in Moran, WY. We have snowmobiled in Michigan, WI, UT,etc bit Cowboy Village at Togette Lodge-50 miles from Jackson,Wy has almost 100 miles of trails that are really groomed ever other day. In a good year because of there elevation 400 inch totals are not uncommon by mid-March. Conditions are usually good from now until April 1st. They rent new machines, all the clothing and helmets, etc and a guide takes 4-8 out based upon skill level. You go 30-50 mph based on skill. If you go you should take 2 fuull day outings and a 1/2 day and you will thank me. I have been 4 times in about 12 years.
