All the odors are gone once your legs are dry.
Two types of spray-ons: Self tanner which lasts for a few days regardless of water. OR - Spray Air Stocking (silk micropowder) that washes off with soap and water. It's water-resistant, however, so you won't have a streaky mess if you walk through a rain shower!
I use department store varieties, rather than drugstore. They are a bit more expensive, but I've never experienced an awful odor - just something like any lotion. But any scent is gone after the application.
By the way, when I want my legs to look really good... I use self-tanner for 3 days straight prior to the event, and then the spray stocking after my shower when getting ready for the event.
Good luck! Enjoy the wedding!
What do your shoes look like anyway?!

I'll place another vote for the Jergens Natural Glow lotion (medium). I used the Sally Hansen spray on my last vacation and I was extremely streaky Perhaps I didn't use it right. The Jergens works gradually - start using it now - if you can get it. I found it extremely hard to find. They were always out. Maybe they have more stock now. One caution however, I did notice some color came off on my white towels after a long soak in the tub with bubblebath.

I use the Sally Hansen and was initially disappointed the store was out of the darkest color. Thought I'd go for the darkest tan right away. I ended up using the medium and was glad as it was a perfect color for my medium-light skin. Glad to hear so many people are using the artifical tans since I live in Hawaii and just learned of yet another friend of a friend with malignant melanoma (and less than 6 months to live) from inadequate sun protection. A reminder only 3 ingredients in U.S.- sold sunscreens actually protect against skin cancer no matter what the label says: avobenzone(also known as Parsol), titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide. It's shocking that some of the major sunscreen brands- the ones with kiosks in all our local drugstores- do not include any of these in their formulations. With such great fake tans available today there is no excuse for risking your skin or your life.

I have used a lot of these products (especially since my cousin died of melanoma) and I like several of them but feel you can't beat the Jergen's for price and smell and it works great _ I do use the mnedium. I liked the color from one of the Coppertone brands but it smelled so awful I had to shower it off right away. The L'oreal isn't bad either. I like the L'oreal moistened towels - they work great.

I beg to differ: the weird smell of both self tanners and the "glow" lotions does not diasappear once your legs are dry. Although the color doesn't rub off when you use the glow lotions, they "perfume" your clothes the way any lotion would. The Jergens smells only slightly weird, mostly floral; the Olay smells salty and a bit chemical. Self-tanners, IMO, both expensive and inexpensive, all smell decidedly strange, and the smell lingers until one showers it off.

Interesting thread!
I've used Banana Boat in the past (liked it--smells the best) but have been using the Jergens Glow (as have many folk here) and it seems to streak less than others I've tried and the color is quite natural. They do warn to let dry before dressing, especially if wearing light colors. Haven't yet had any problem with staining but don't dry off with a white towel after shaving your legs (some of the color came off in the tub I noticed, but no other time)

The smell is a function of the chemical reaction that takes place in your skin that gives you the color. The only difference in smell between brands is the initial fragrance you get when you put it on.
I like Lancome bronzer lotion. It is tinted, so if you carefully examine your legs after you put it on, you can spot any potential streaks and smooth them out before the lotion begins to work. Plus, if you've waited too long, the tint gives your legs a little color in the meantime. It also has a very, very subtle shimmer which I like.
As pointed out above: exfoliate,go easy on knees and ankles, wash your hands after and forearms, and under your rings.
