Best salt water taffy in Md.
 

Where can I find the best salt water taffy in Maryland? I'm assuming someplace like Ocean City, but which brand? <BR> <BR>Thanks in advance for all answers.

Showing my UK ignorance here..... <BR> <BR>OK I'm fairly sure that 'taffy' is what is known in the UK as 'toffee' but where does the Salt Water come in ? <BR>Taffy/toffee made with salt water sounds horrible !

Hi WotDat: <BR> <BR>No fear -- taffy isn't really toffee (toffee is, in my experience, harder and, well, different.). Taffy is a confection that is pulled and stretched (cliche: pulling taffy). Salt water taffy is a specialty of the mid-Atlantic states. <BR> <BR>I'm not doing a very good job of this. We got ours this summer at Candy Kitchen, with branches all over the MD and Del shore. <BR> <BR>Here's some history from the Web: <BR>Why is it called salt water taffy? The answer lies, of course, in another legend this time concerning Atlantic City taffy vender David Bradley in 1883. The story goes that Mr. Bradley's boardwalk store was damaged by storm tide water in the summer of 1883. Included in the damage was his supply of taffy. The next day his first customer was a girl who asked for a bag of taffy. Being in a bit of bad humor because of his soggy taffy, Bradley replied, "You mean salt water taffy." Apparently, Bradley's mother overheard his remark and suggested that he give the candy that name. In the summer of 1884, he opened his stand selling "Salt Water Taffy." The rest is history. Atlantic City directories show no listing of any store carrying "salt water" taffy until 1889. So make what you will of the story. The phrase itself, "salt water taffy", apparently was never copyrighted and has been used by various candy makers over the years. The peak of the taffy frenzy occurred in the 1920's when there were over 400 companies making and marketing the product. <BR> <BR> <BR>

While you are at Ocean City or Rehoboth buying salt water taffy, be sure to buy some of their delicious caramel corn. Yum!!!

We've been going to Ocean City, MD for over 20 years and have to say our absolute favorite salt water taffy is from Dolles! They have a stand down on the boardwalk and also a store in the Gold Coast Mall (or they used to). We make a special trip there its that good.

Also, don't forget some carmel corn at Fishers! They have one up by 145th (at the MD/DE line) and they're down on the boardwalk! Make sure you get it when its warm! AWESOME!

&quot;Pulling&quot; the taffy reminds me of making Edinburgh Rock when I was a child (in the UK), but it just contains sugar, water, cream of tartar, and flavoring, so can't be quite the same.
