best route around chicago on fridays

I'm traveling thru Chicago from the east heading toward Minnesota. Map quest says to take route 90 which goes right thru the city… there has to be a better way around and I’ll be coming into it Friday evening about rush hour…. Any help on the best way to go?

I have limited experience with getting around Chicago but when we went through it was gridlock on the highways and dh doesn't abide gridlock so we got off and used a city map to take surface roads through the city and it wasn't fast but at least when you stopped it was for a red light so you knew why you were stopping. The other choice is to find a place to stop early on Friday evening and head out very early Saturday morning. I don't know but it seems there should be a ferry for the north route, maybe someone knows about that. Joining all those roads and going through Chicago was crazy, all it takes is one fender bender or construction site to make a multi mile parking lot for several hours.

There is a ferry from Muskegon, Michigan, to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which takes about 2 1/2 hours. You could get on I94 in Milwaukee and be in Minneapolis in about five hours.

From Indiana,
Stay on I-80 west
In Illinois
go north on I-355
You will run into I-290
take that for few miles to I-53 north
take that to I-90 west
continue to Wisconsin

This way you will avoid the city and travel mostly through far southern, western suburbs. There still will be some traffic but not as bad as I-90 going through the city.

You can take I-80 West all the way to I-39, take that north to hook up with I-90 in Rockford. A bit longer, but would avoid some traffic.
