Crazy cookies,

Northern Virginia?
Central Virginia (Richmond-Williamsburg)?
"west" Virginia (Charlottesville to Roanoke)?
"East" Virginia (Norfolk-Hampton-Virginia Beach)?

I would say that you can buy a kebab at any South Asian or Lebanese restaurant, but I would not say that "kebab" is the first thing I think of when I think of eating out in Virginia, and I think of eating out in Virginia a lot.

crazycookies Jan 1st, 2013 04:48 AM

OK I am going all around va so any restaurants really !!!!

JanetKMR Jan 1st, 2013 04:52 AM

I'd love to help, but your question is far too broad. There is a recent thread on Richmond restaurants you can look at.

Gretchen Jan 1st, 2013 08:33 AM

Kebab? Really? Get Jane and Michael Stern's Road Food book or Diners Driveins and Dives.
Where is "all around Virginia"?

Birdie Jan 1st, 2013 08:49 AM

The best restaurant in Virginia? I'd say it's debatable but, in my opinion, it's the Inn at Little Washington.

nytraveler Jan 1st, 2013 09:11 AM

I thin kit's fairly safe that the best restaurant i VA doesn; serve kebabs.

I really think you need to define what you are looking for.

Just kebabs - then you're looking for casuale and inexpensive?

Or do you want really elegant food?

Cuisines you like and dislike?

Budget?

Atmosphere?

crazycookies: Welcome to Fodors. You'll find that you will get more help/useful advice if you work w/ us . . .

Where in VA -it is a big state? What sort of budget? etc.

These one sentence posts and <B>!!!</B>'s don't give us much to work with.

crazycookies Jan 3rd, 2013 01:02 AM

OK really I think I'm looking for any good restaurants u recommend so if you could give me elegant or little bit of a high budget restaurants that would be nice ( I'm mostly going around the Hampton Roads area) BTW saying that kabob isn't good food isn't very nice so please keep in mind many people like kabob

vjpblovesitaly Jan 3rd, 2013 06:26 AM

Who said kabob isn't good food?

nytraveler Jan 3rd, 2013 10:03 AM

No one said that kebab isn't good food - just that it is casual and inexpensive.

It was not clear hat you meant by your first post - best food in VA would usually be expensive and elegant in a noted restaurant with a well-known chef.

Birdie Jan 3rd, 2013 06:43 PM

Hi, crazycookies. That does help and I should be able to assist you with food in Hampton Roads but it will help me if you tell me what cities you will be visiting. Williamsburg, Newport News/Hampton, Norfolk, VA Beach? It is a pretty big area. If I don't get right back to you, be patient. I'll be away from the board for a few days.

crazycookies Jan 9th, 2013 11:06 PM

I really don't where exactly I just want suggestions alright is that to hard to ask???

Ackislander Jan 10th, 2013 02:17 AM

There is a doner kebab shop on the west end of Carytown in Richmond. It is just like a doner kebab shop in London or Paris, though the owners are Syrians rather than Turks. A yummy lamb schwarma sandwich will cost you about $6.

Many people would call Acacia, just past the other end of Carytown the best restaurant in Richmond, the the service is often amateur. With wine, you can drop $100 per person.

Now, you have an answer. Stop being rude and grow up or go away.

The Best Restaurant I have ever been to in Virginia is The Inn at Little Washington. Fabulous.

JanetKMR Jan 10th, 2013 04:43 AM

I have been to that kabab place yet...they are supposed to have great falafel. It's near the salon I go to and plan to have lunch there after my next manicure (if not before).

Acacia is definitely a place where the back of the house saves the front of the house. It's good but I wouldn't say the best in Richmond.

And yes, there is The Inn at Little Washington and then there is every place else :-)

Ackislander Jan 10th, 2013 11:53 AM

I didn't like the felafel at all, Janet, but I am used to Israeli style felafel. Too much tahini made it taste bitter to me. My standard (this sounds too snobby for words) is L'As du Felafel in Paris. But the lamb was delicious, and the pita are baked fresh for each order.

I went last night to the food truck at the Arco Iris Latin Market on Staples Mill and had a burrito mixto that was absolutely nothing like a California burrito or the burrito that has spread east from there. Much more like an enchilada. A little salty for me.

I also had a torta al pastor (I was sharing with my wife). This was not a pie but a sandwich on a soft roll with beef grilled al pastor, a slice of ham, a sort of crema mayonnaise, sliced avocado, lettuce and I think tomato. It was delicious.

You get a ticket and pay inside the grocery store. Everything was cooked from scratch, and it was all cheap.

JanetKMR Jan 10th, 2013 01:15 PM

I understand :-) There is a new Latin Market in the shopping center with Total Wine on Robious Road that has a sign saying "Tacos" I want to try soon.

Ackislander Jan 11th, 2013 01:46 AM

Robioous Road, eh? Have to think about that.

My wife and I went to Kuba Kuba last night. She had black bean soup and empanadillas, I had the shrimp and mussel soup and a Cuban sandwich. Since her empanadadillas were as big as empanadas anywhere else abd my sandwich was vast, we have enough left over for lunch or dinner today. My soup in particular was delicious. The food is not authentically Cuban, though based on it, but I like going there, and with Black Sheep, it is one of the places I like to take visitors. The English in particular seem to love it.

JanetKMR Jan 11th, 2013 06:46 AM

There are always leftovers from Kuba Kuba :-) I love their Tres Leche Cake, so I always take some of that home too.

Can't go wrong with Black Sheep!

I know a GREAT restaurant for kabob in VA. It is in Springfield, pretty far from Hampton Roads area. If you are going to be going up I95 towards Washington, D.C. GO TO THIS PLACE.

Afgan Kebab, 4 solid stars on yelp.com. It is a nice, sit down and get waited on restaurant, and their Naan, kabobs (lamb, chicken beef, peshwari chaplee, shami, chopan, palau) are all excellent, as are their other entrees like aushak, qaubili palau, carrayee. Big menu. We LOVE this place. Family owned and operated, great service, great prices, excellent quality and portions. They also have a good interntaional supermarket located beside the restaurant.

It is not far off of I95, so is easy to reach if you are driving through on way to or from D.C.

Voted as "Best Kabobs in the D.C. metro area" by our local area newspaper

LOL, Janet, we just finished our slice of tres leches cake for lunch. We were too full to eat it and just had them pack up a slice for today!

JanetKMR Jan 11th, 2013 10:25 AM

That's the spirit!!! I plan to get a whole cake for my husband's birthday cake this year.

obxgirl Jan 11th, 2013 10:39 AM

Lots of great kabob options in the DC area -- none of them particularly upscale in ambiance but all of them authentic and very tasty:

Ravi Kabob (Arlington)

Kabob Bazaar (Arlington)

Bamian (Falls Church) -- I ate there last night

Kabob Palace (Crystal City)

Food Corner Kabob House (Dupont Circle)

Moby Dick House of Kabob (Dupont Circle)
