Best restaurants in Kauai?
 

Suggestions for Kauai restaurants? Love fish, sushi, seafood.

In my opinion - I've always had a great dinner and wonderful sunset view at The Beach House. Here's my review:

I love Cafe Hanalei at the Princeville Resort on the North Shore. I love the view more so than the food. The view is amazing: http://www.princevillehotelhawaii.com/de_cafe.htm

Dukes at the Marriott on the East is not too bad.

Mermaids in Kapaa (East) is good...neat wraps of all kinds.

Postcards in Hanalei has excellent fish dishes, especially their daily specials.

For take out, the fresh sushi and poke at Hanalei Dolphin fish market can't be beat.

It ain't fancy, but the ono and mahi at either of the Polynesia Cafes (one in Kapa'a and one in Hanalei) are really, really good.

We enjoyed Cafe Hanelie, the sunset view was great and you felt like you could reach out and touch the green mountainside.
Our best meals were at Hukelani Lanai and their sister restaurant Gaylords. Hukelani Lanai was the best deal in town, great food reasonably priced
We did not go to the Beach House, we didnt want to dine late the only time available

Dukes is great for atmosphere, entertainment, very Hawaiian as is their sister restaurant Keoki's Paradise, Food is decent

Lots of folks mentioning Cafe Hanalei. Not sure when you planning on visiting, but the Princeville Hotel, where Cafe Hanalei is located will be closing for extensive renovations in September. I think I read here that Cafe Hanalei was already closed, but I'd call the hotel.

The Plantation Gardens is great, super yummy food and great drinks. The Beach House is also wonderful - the perfect hawaii experience with a great a great sunset view.

You didn't mention what shore you'll be on. I wouldn't drive north to south in the dark.

My favorites in Poipu on the south shore, in order of favorites:
Tidepools at the Hyatt
Plantation Gardens
Roy's
Beach House
Dondero's at the Hyatt
Keoiki's Paradise
Casablanca

We live full-time on Kauai, and have been to all of these restaurants.

The Beach House is repeatedly pretty darn bad - hit or miss, but mostly miss, on both food and service. And too noisy and expensive for what it is. Great view though. So perhaps for cocktails if you're in Poipu.

I'd suggest Hukilau Lanai in Wailua. Food has been especially good on repeat visits and service, well this is Kauai, so just pretty good.

Tomorrow we're going to go to Mediterranean Gourmet in Haena (used to be Charo's). I plan on doing a review. It has received acclaims.

As for the others mentioned, I'm sorry to say that (for me) they just aren't very good.

Now, if you have a condo, for the very best fish, I'd suggest you cook it. I like Fish Express, across from Walmart.

agree with fish express, they have the best limu poke, muy ono. plus, another vote for postcards whenever we're at northshore. but my heart(burn) will always belong to hanamaulu café for great selection and price, too. one of the few places that has been around forever and still meticulous about their menu. we usually bring our own ice chest full of drinks.

we used to be regular sushi bar flies at kintaros from the time they extended, only went towards closing (they close after last customer/fish is gone), it’s less crowded and b/c a particular chef charge practically nothing, only for the alcohol. of course, we always left a large tip. otherwise, if it wasn’t for him, i wouldn’t bother. it’s not the same, food is mediocre, it’s too crowded and the service is shoddy. or maybe we’re burned-out on sushi. we haven’t been back around the same time someone drove their car through the restaurant’s back area.

now, puka dog with mango relish and hot sauce, that's more like it.

You are one of the first I have ever seen who agrees with my opinion of the Beach House ..... nice bar, nice views, but not all that great..

Our favs in no particular order ; we are North Shore visitors:

Postcards, Hukilau Lanai and Gaylords, Polenesia cafe (Gourmet food on paper plates), Cafe Portofino, C J's in Princeville (great fresh salad bar) and for fun food Puka Dogs and Kauai Pizza. Oh, I forgot Kauai Pasta in Kapaa and Lihue. Pasta with meat sauce as good as any I can get in NYC.

Add Casa di Amici to my list.

We really enjoyed Kintaro. WE don't eat sushi but the food was delicious. They cook hibachi style but you can also sit at a table and order of a menu for quicker service!

We also like Garden Isle Barbeque for Chinese.

Not fine dining by any stretch of th imagination, but we loved eating there.

iamq surprisingly speaks of something that may be very important to many a tourist.

Surprised others didn't chime in. Princeville Hotel will be closed for at least the next 6 months, including their restaurants and livingroom.

It is a big loss for the area for the next few months for travellers. But the future will be that much brighter.

Like I've said before, some poke and ono salad from Dolphin spread on a saltine cracker in the sand with some bottled water is heaven!!!!!!!

gyppielou - FYI the Princeville doesn't close for renovations until September this year. Until then, everything will remain open. Cafe Hanalei is definitely still open.

Princeville Hotel closing will be mid-September (according to latest info given to hotel employees) -- and lasting at least 7 months.

Cafe Hanalei's Friday night seafood buffet has already been discontinued, but breakfast/lunch/dinner (and the Sunday brunch) are still going strong; ditto for food & beverage in The Living Room. Their La Cascata restaurant is rumored to be closing soon; ditto for the hotel's weekly lu`au.

What does Malamapono mean and how do you say it? I have found a lot of different definitions for it.

btw, Tarheel80, I would tell you our favorite places, but the DH is a Wolfpacker, and I'm sure the 2 of you would not agree!!!
