Best Resort in Key West
 

<BR>Doing research on a good place to stay in Key West. Confused about which is the nicest! Would like to hear suggestions. Thanks, Laura <BR>P.S.We prefer to be on the water!

Try doing a text search for Key West...this subject gets rehashed every few weeks! "Resort" sort of implies (to me, at least) big beaches, and there's really no such animal in Key West. On Front Street, which runs down the Gulf and is near the sunset activities and most of the tourist activities and restaurants, there is the Ocean Key House, the Hilton, the Pier House, the Hyatt and the Galleon. All are on the water, and except for the Ocean Key House, all have very tiny man-made beaches. I prefer the Galleon, as it is a timeshare that rents to non-owners and has fully equipped kitchens, etc. Of the hotels, I prefer the Hyatt.

We always stay at the original Flagler resort - the Casa Marina. Used to be a Mariott resort, but I think it has recently been sold. Very very nice. Been there 5 or 6 times and I'll never stay anywhere else. Have fun! Wish I were going soon!

I've been to Key West a few times and absolutely LOVE the Hyatt and the Hilton Resort and Marina...both are on the water (which was also a MUST for me)and are in the middle of everything, be it Mallory Square, Duval St, or water sports..There really aren't any "big" beaches at all..the Hyatt has a beach, but it literally could only hold about 2 people on it! <BR>The Hilton is just a beautiful hotel, and you can sit and watch the cruise ships come in. <BR>Both hotels are great,although I prefer the Hyatt because it is a little less busy and quieter than the Hilton. Both hotels run in between $200-400/night, depending on time of year

What do you mean by "resort"? If you're interested in the "small luxury hotel" category, I highly recommend the Marquesa. It's a beautiful small hotel, with a tropical courtyard, two pools, no kids, and everything you could ask for. Of course, it is not on the water. Either the Hyatt or Hilton has a private little island just off Key West -- I think it's called Sunset Key. I'm sure someone out there has been, I've just heard it's spectacular.

The 'Southernmost Motel' was nice...

I would recommend the Wyndham Reach - lovely, relatively small and great pool and location. One site, interestingly, shows the ownership a Hyatt, but not www.keywest.com. Nice small beach and floating bar where you can have lunch and listen to the music. Now I must be honest and say that I haven't stayed there since September 1989, when for some reason I cancelled our reservations in Guadeloupe, FWI and chose Key West instead. Oddly, that was the very week Hugo came through the Leeward Islands and wiped out Guadeloupe. It was just the Reach in those days, but it was wonderful. I still have an old brochure from that time. I purchased a t-shirt there, one I still have it - showed a 1930's prop passenger plane flying over the palms at sunset - "Last Flight Out." Enjoy Key West, wherever you stay. And have a drink with each sundown!
