Best places to stay overnight
I'm narrowing down my itinerary and now I'm after some advice regarding recommended places to stay over night. Our family of 4 (kids 12,15) will be driving from LA and have 11 nights in Oregon before flying to San Francisco in September 2018.
Don't really want to drive more than 4 hours at a time. We love healthy food and are happy to travel to a great eatery. Night 1, 2 Will be driving from Eureka to Gold Beach - thinking of the Pacific Reef Hotel, plan to take the Rogue Jet river trip Night 3,4,5 Newport. Trying to find a vrbo or similar for under $300 a night. Plan to explore the coast from here. Night 6. Timberline Lodge Night 7. Best Western Columbia River (not sure about this) Night 8-11. Portland. Thinking about McMenamins Kennedy school, but won't have the car at this stage and I'm thinking it may become tiresome getting an uber in and out of town each day. Also searching for 2 bed house, but it's a bit pricey. It's hard to find a hotel that has a family room. We plan to relax in Portland and eat well. Any advice is much appreciated. |
Night 5 try someplace north of Newport. Maybe McMinnville(?)
The kids would probably like the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum near McMinnville. Timberline and the Best Western in Hood River are good but about an hour apart. I would choose one or the other. What do you want to see outside of Portland? The TriMet system (light rail, bus and trolley) covers a wide area if you find something family suitable in the downtown. The end of the red line light rail is at the PDX airport. |
Check out Ethel's Coast Cottage in Yachats. Ethelscoastcottage.com. Or call 541-726-9720.
Has 2 bedrooms plus sofa sleeper. Ocean views. I have stayed there, nice and cozy. |
Also the Fireside Motel in Yachats has a family suite.
Great location. You can walk along ocean to Adobe Resort next door for dining with great views http://www.firesidemotel.com/guest-rooms/ |
I actually did not know Kennedy had family suites. I'd suggest looking at the crystal hotel- it's much more convenient- but I don't think it's got family rooms.
Hotel Monaco might. Can the kids share a bed? I'm pretty sure we've done four or five people in a Monaco suite before. |
Thanks sunbum1944, Ethel's looks nice, but we won be able to bring our own sheets. Yes I'd listed Fireside as a possibility- and I've been trying to toss up where would be best to stay and after reading loads of comments I decided on Newport.
Marvelousmouse, I emailed Kennedy and they said I could put 2 rollaways in one of their school rooms- it would probably be a bit squishy but the appeal of this place is the facilities. Kids can share a bed.....not ideal though. I'll check out the Monaco. I'm not sure which area of Portland would be best to stay in. The Inn at Northrup looks fine, but seems a long way out. Thanks tomfuller- I'll take a look at McMinnville- is that science centre similar to the California Science Centre? I had planned to take them there when in LA. I know Timberline and Best Western are close to each other, I don't want to back track though, so that was why I thought I could spend 1 night in each. I'm not keen on driving to the hood river area to hike and then drive back to Timberline to sleep. So many people rave about Timberline- I feel it is a must do. I'm not sure what I want to do outside of Portland, other than see the main points of interest along the coast and Hood River. My thinking was to sort out where to stay so that I can book it a year ahead, then plan activities much later. |
Kind of an off the wall suggestion. And they tend to sell out so it's entirely possible that there is no availability
But hostelling international northwest Portland would be a fantastic location and their family room sleeps 5, I believe. Kids would have to climb, but everyone would get their own bed. So I'd call them and ask about price; if it's available I'd book it as a back up. |
Actually marvelousmouse, my hubby did suggest a hostel. Not sure if they provide sheets etc, but if you say it's a great location I'll take a look, thanks.

My favorite place to stay in Newport is Elizabeth St Inn. All rooms oceanfront, covered parking and breakfast included
Not sure if they have rooms that work well for 4 but it's a good location- walking distance to Nye Beach area. Also have stayed at the Embarcadero. Again, good location, overlooks bay instead of ocean. |
Thanks sunbum1944- Elizabeth looks good
|
And the Elizabeth St Inn serves free chowder in the lobby around 5 and cookies in the evening.
