Best Places to Live in the US

What are the best places to live in the US- if one is looking for safety, affordability, and culture?

How about 187 opinions on that topic?

Affordability is relative.

Manhattan Island, New York City.

Traverse City Michigan It's beautiful and offers outdoor and indoor activities, a good music and arts scene, restuarants that are fantastic, good schools and fantastic people!

One problem is that the cost of living is high relative to the wages because so many people want to live here.

I've lived here all my life and I can't say many good things about it. The weather is way too hot and dry, but I guess in the winter its nice for some people. Most of us actually lovingly welcome the rain and we pray for snow, at least just a little!
Plus, there's not really anything to do here besides getting drunk and going to the clubs! Which I guess for some people isn't so bad! lol

Make a list of your likes and dislikes. Then pick an area that suits YOU.What might be paradise to some might be hell to others. If you dont like cold grey places stay away from the north. If you hate heat &humidity stay away from the south.Find your own paradise.

Slow day at the office Lois? No replies yet to this question on the Europe board. Didn't check to see if you posted it on others.

Woo-hoo, I did it!

TxTravelPro, I just loved Fredricksburg and ever since I was there I see the cutest renovated "Sunday Houses" in all my renovation/ decorating magazines.

I don't usually respond to these, but...Leslie....geez! Get out more. You don't need to only go to a bar in Tucson for fun (although Gentle Ben's brews are really good). Have you heard of the Desert Museum, Sabino Canyon, hiking at many areas, Saguaro National Monumnet, etc. Yes, summer sucks, but winter sucks in most other places. There is good theater here and music, as well. And there are fabulous restaurants. Too bad you have lived somewhere all of your life and hate it. Tucson is beautiful. The only thing I agree with is that crime rate is relatively high, especially property crimes.

everyting is relative. i couldn't wait to hightail it out of manhattan and then the nyc area for maryland's beautiful eastern shore. give me clean air, friendly accommodating people, clean streets, beautiful scenery, and great restaurants over all the crap you get in nyc that comes along with "culture". i'm only 38 and my stress level has decreased 10-fold since we've moved. manhattan is a great place to visit but certainly not raise a family, imo.

the only thing i miss in manhattan, other than friends, is delivery of anything you want.

Sorry Artist, that's just my opinion of the Old Pueblo. I believe there's only so many times you can go to the Desert Museum before getting entirely bored of it. I can go into the desert behind my house and see the same crap! The only joy I get out of living here is driving up to Mt Lemmon to escape the wretched heat!
