Best Place to Travel in February (U.S.)

Hi - We live in Minnesota and would like to plan a long-weekend getaway, the first weekend in February for my stepmother's 50th birthday. We travel often and are looking for someplace different to make this trip more special (we often go to Chicago, Marco Island, FL, Las Vegas and San Diego). Any advice on good places to go at this time of year?

"Good places at this time of the year" sounds bascially weather based, and that leads to the obvious South Florida or other sunbelt places. The other option weather-wise is a winter wonderland, such as New England.

Slightly outside of the US, the Quebec City winter carnival is supposed to be a lot of fun :

Ahhh..a question after my own heart. I live in Chicago and try to get out in February:

IMHO it is hard to beat Coachella Valley California. That is the Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, etc. area of Southern Ca. I have spent a few February weekends there in the past few years. It is heaven on earth compared to the Midwest at that time of year.

If you are looking for something different and don't mind the cold might want to consider visiting the Platte River near Kearney, NB where a great numbers of sandhill cranes stop for a few weeks to fatten up for their migration.
Or you might want to consider flying into Jackson, WY and going the the Tetons. Just outside of Jackson is the National Elk Refuge where you can take horse drawn sleighs through the thousand or so elk which overwinter in the area. The park service feeds them so are not as skittish.
If you like birds, Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island, FL can't be beat. Great seashelling as well.

How about Houston? In early February it can be as cool as the 60's or as warm as the 80's! It's still a lot warmer than Minnesota! If it's yucky out, there are lots of museums and NASA and of course shopping at the Galleria. If it's nice you can go to Galveston Island and hit the beach or enjoy the Kemah Boardwalk with all it's great restaurants and rides for the kids.

vacationdreamer - thanks for that link! The winter carnival looks great!

I am not sure where my next vacation will be (well, actually my next vacation after San Francisco/Arizona this fall), but that sounds like so much fun!
