Best place to soak up the keys?

We're travelling to the US in October and plan to stay 3 nights in the Florida Keys. We'd like to stay somewhere that will give us that real 'Hemmingway', chilled out feel. Given our limited time, can you recommend a particular area of the Keys to stay? Do we head for Key West, Key Largo or somewhere inbetween?

Also, could you recommend a hotel, B&B to stay? A special occasion, so somewhere comfortable and luxurious is just what we're looking for! So budget wise, happy to splash out if the place is right. Needs to be in a quiet position, maybe somewhere to watch the sun go down by sea. All suggestions much appreciated! Thanks.

Liz

I think Key West would be great for just three days. In my opinion, the best and nicest place to stay in Key West is The Marquesa.

I'm very partial to Key West and the Marquesa Hotel is beautiful. It's a perfect place for the real "Hemingway" feeling and you can visit his house (and the 6 toed cats) while you're there. However, if you plan on visiting the keys the week of October 23, you'd probably do better staying someplace else as that's the week of Fantasy Fest.

Key Largo isn't much of a vacation destination, but if you decide against Key West, I'd consider Islamorada...maybe the Moorings. Check out its website at themooringsvillage.com

I adore Key West and agree that Marquesa would be my choice. If you are considering Islamorada, take a look at Casa Morada. Wonderful small hotel with excellent service! www.casamorada.com

Here's a website you might be interested in. www.keywestinns.com
I am using it now to plan my own trip to keywest. It features alot of B&B's and the prices are pretty good.

Islamorada always makes me think of the laid back attitude you're looking for. It's also near enough for a trip to Key West (which would be a shame to miss if you're that close)! You'll enjoy the Keys wherever you end up staying, so just get ready to relax and be on "island time".
