Best place to eat in New Orleans?

We will be visiting New Orleans in November. What is the very best place to eat? We love fish and love all the local food. Any suggestions? Thanks! Would also like a place that has nice service and fine wines.

Hullo -- Your query is certain to get foodies in a lather since New Orleans is home to so many exceptional restaurants, singling out The Best is bound to be controversial.

Here are my favorites:
Bayonna in the Quarter 504 525-4455
Emeril's in the Warehouse District 504 528- 9393
Galatoire's in the Quarter (no reservations, hint: dine EARLY and the wait will be short) 504 525-2021
Gautreau's in the Garden District 899-7397

In addition, there are some restaurants that are utterly special for particular meals:

Breakfast at Brennans is a must!
Brennan's Restaurant in the Quarter 504 525-971
Sunday Brunch at Commander's Palace in the Garden District -- another must!
Snack or Refreshment Stop -- the Camelia Grill in Carrolton; get a coffee freeze!

Best Bar: The Napoleon House in the Quarter. Order a brandy alexander!

The recommendations in the previous posting are all very good but I would add Pelican Club - excellent in every way (food!, service, atmosphere). We went back a second time while in N.O. Enjoy!

Second vote for Commander's Palace and Brennan's. Brunch is outstanding, but anything else is good also.

Mother's on Canal for home cooking in a "dive decor" and Pearl's for a downtown diner that has very good cheap food when you've had your fill of the white linen dining experience (like that's possible in New Orleans). There are some wonderful places in Metairie (just outside New Orleans) for great seafood.
