Best Place in NYC to get State Muffin

OK, I've just learnt that other states have state flowers, state mottos, etc., but New York also has a "state muffin".

Where's the best place in New York City to get an authentic state muffin?

SueNYC Oct 1st, 2011 03:01 AM

ok I give up. What is the state muffin of New York.

gb944 Oct 1st, 2011 03:40 AM

Evidently, it is the apple muffin... ref google search.

starrs Oct 1st, 2011 05:40 AM

This would make a great cocktail party guessing game.

starrs Oct 1st, 2011 05:46 AM

What is the state muffin of Minnesota?
How about Massachusetts? (I bet you can't guess without googling)
Official donut of MA?

I'd go to Magnolia Bakery.

Sounds like choosing a state muffin was a school project rather than an effort by pureyors of muffins. I've never seen a muffin in NYC labeled as a state muffin.

starrs Oct 1st, 2011 07:05 AM

LOL, ellenem :-)

Here's a pic of one from Magnolia -

Or as close as it gets to an apple muffin

No one in the Big Apple eats apple muffins, the state muffin? Hard to believe. I thought there would be at least a dozen recommendations.

330east Oct 1st, 2011 07:45 PM

With all due respect I believe you can get an apple muffin in just about any muffin place in NYC or throughout the state. At last count that was 2,467 venues.

starrs Oct 1st, 2011 07:54 PM

I doubt that 1 in 10 people in NYC know that there is a state muffin, much less what it is.

cferrb Oct 1st, 2011 08:04 PM

Maybe it's supposed to be a stud muffin.

easytraveler Oct 1st, 2011 08:12 PM

330east: Have you ever had one?

I can't remember ever having one.

A blueberry muffin - yes

A plain muffin - yes

A nutty muffin - yes

A chocolate muffin - yes

Do New Yorkers have muffin contests during state fairs? Does the lady in the polka-dotted dress always win? What kinds of apples do they use? How did the apply muffin originate? Are there cookbooks written featuring only apple muffins?

If there are 2,567 "venues" all baking apple muffins - how come the New York Times hasn't written features articles on the apple muffin? What's wrong with journalists today?

SueNYC Oct 2nd, 2011 03:33 AM

I have an apple bran muffin at my local coffee shop at least once a week. Journalists have more interesting things to eat and write about.

J62 Oct 2nd, 2011 04:25 AM

NY State muffin = a bagel.

easytraveler Oct 2nd, 2011 04:50 AM

SueNYC: au contraire. I've found at least one recipe on the NY Times for apple muffin:

Eat too many muffins and you get a muffin top!

When are you going to NYC, easytraveler?

Aduchamp1 Oct 2nd, 2011 10:52 AM

The NY State Muffin attended Spence, then Sarah Lawrence, and was married at St. Bart's.
____________

I doubt that 1 in 10 people in NYC know that there is a state muffin, much less what it is.

But I will bet 10 out of 10 NY'ers could give a flying about the NY State Muffin except the idiots in Albany who voted for it and the apple lobby that campaigned for it. I sure as hey hope there is no muffin lobby.

nytraveler Oct 2nd, 2011 10:56 AM

Try Zabar's - they have a host of different types of muffins - and I know apple cinnamon is one of them. And they all seem really good - but I'm sure about a zillion calories.

And no - I never knew there was a state muffin.

Cranachin Oct 2nd, 2011 11:28 AM

Why go to the Big Apple when you can bake them for yourself using The Official New York State Apple Muffin Recipe?

http://www.nyapplecountry.com/nysapplemuffin.htm

A bunch of elementary schoolers in North Syracuse came up with it, so maybe it's an Upstate Thing and not to be found in NYC.

I thought that I would sample a local product when in NY, somewhat like having lobster on Cape Cod, even though we have a heck of a great place locally to get a lobster roll.

Besides which, I'm one of the world's worst bakers.

nytraveler: thanks for the suggestion. I'll give Zabar's a try.

Just one muffin. One muffin. That's all I'm asking for...

rmw555 Oct 2nd, 2011 12:49 PM

Maybe in some of the rural/upstate parts of NY state, apple dishes (muffins, pies, whatever) are common. Or apple donuts- those are popular at apple-picking places this time of year.

But if you're asking about "local" classic dishes in NYC?? J62 had it right - you don't want a muffin, you want a bagel. Or a black and white cookie. Or a pastrami (really any) sandwich from Katz's. Or a hot dog from Grey's Papaya. The Zabar's reco is great but it doesn't matter what you buy there - the experience is what's New York about it.

Have all the muffins you want while in Manhattan, and I'm sure there are nice ones at the better bakeries - just be aware that it will not be the equivalent of a lobster roll in Maine, gumbo in New Orleans, crab cakes in MD, etc.

Aduchamp1 Oct 2nd, 2011 01:12 PM

One question. If the state muffin is apple and no one knows that fact, few eat them, and fewer actual know where to get them without guessing, why is it the state muffin?

Aduchamp1 Oct 2nd, 2011 01:13 PM

One why would anyone care?

Cranachin Oct 2nd, 2011 07:48 PM

Aduchamp - It's the state muffin due to a creative civics lesson in which a North Syracuse fourth-grade class participated in 1987. Click on the links in my previous post to read about them :)

Disclaimer - I am not from Syracuse (or anywhere in New York), so no civic pride on display here!

Cranachin Oct 2nd, 2011 07:49 PM

Maybe there is a movie somewhere in easytraveler's trip - "The Muffins Take Manhattan"??

Aduchamp1 Oct 2nd, 2011 08:04 PM

Yikes, Mario was manipulated by 4th graders. It is worse than I thought. If it occurred today the headline on Fox News would be "Cuomo seduced by 4th graders' muffins."

easytraveler Oct 3rd, 2011 04:14 AM

Thanks for the suggestion of NY bagels - I've already had those and they are great.

There are at least two other states with state muffins- Massachusetts has the corn muffin and Minnesota has the blueberry muffin.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_foods

I was thinking that the best place to go get an apple muffin would be Yorkville-Manhattan. Seems like those old time German bakeries are disappearing. There's still Glaser's. If they don't have an apple muffin then maybe H&H Bagels might.

Cranachin: Funny! :) Maybe I will do a movie. I even know of a composer in LA who does music for teevee...it's an idea! "March of the Apple Muffins"

mclaurie Oct 3rd, 2011 03:27 PM

Two Little Red Hens happens to be in Yorkville but has nothing to do with German bakeries. They do happen to have excellent muffins (and other baked goods) although I've not had an apple muffin there nor do I know if they make them. (sounds really boring). http://www.twolittleredhens.com/ Apple Cinnamon muffins are sort of common but most people would prefer something else.

easytraveler Oct 29th, 2011 06:20 PM

Thanks for all your help!

Here's the one and only apple muffin I found in the Big Apple:
