Best place for New Year's Eve (East Coast)
We love to travel for New Year's Eve and are looking for our next destination. Since Fodorites helped us plan our honeymoon (one month ago!!!), it makes sense that you'd help us plan our first married trip after that.
We love low-key (NYC is not our thing), but with something to do (first night kind of stuff) like dinner, pubs, walking through streets and stores, people-watching. We love atmosphere, and are not opposed to rustic/quiet fun as well as a little bit of partying! We'd like to stay on the Eastern side of the US - somewhere we can drive to or get a good, short deal on a flight. We have been to the following places: Annapolis Poconos Niagra Falls Ireland We live in Philadelphia and my husband is from Boston. So, what are your suggstions? I've looked into Cape Cod and Key West so far. Thanks! |

Might have a look at Southwest's route map and see where they fly. Similar idea, go to travelocity's dream maps and get a sense of relative airfare prices from Phil.
Have you been to Buck's COunty? Some nice b & bs. http://www.evermay.com/specials.php http://fodors.com/forums/threadselec...&tid=91668 |
what about Savannah, GA ??

Provincetown on Cape Cod can be a unique place to spend New Years Eve.
The town is especially bright during the Winter Holidays with many shops decorated and the Pilgrim Monument adorned with thousands of lights. Most Inns, Shops, and Restaurants are open during the Holiday period. |
Thanks for the input! We have decided on Cape Cod (it is easy since we'll be in Mass. right before that weekend). I've read that Chatham has great celebrations, but now am also thinking Provincetown. Input?
Also, we now need a great place to stay. We generally like to have a kitchen of some sort so that we can veg out as much as possible. Any feedback/suggestions would be appreciated. |
Chatham has (or a least did last year) a First Night Celebration and they do fireworks at midnight. It's a charming town with nice shops and restaurants. The Chatham Bars Inn has cottages. I'm not sure if the cottages are open at that time. It is very expensive.

We've been going to Amelia ISland on, or about that time for years.

Amelia Island looks wonderful! That will definitely be on our list for future New Years destinations! As is Savannah... the list keeps growing!

How much of a drive are you up for?
I did Orlando one year and it was lots of fun. I would maybe do Georgetown if I wanted *some* nightlife but not a rager. |
Oh you should think about Atlanta!!!!!

Check out the Fort Hill Bed and Breakfast in Eastham which is mid-way between Chatham and Provincetown. www.forthill They have a cottage that we stayied in a couple of years ago that has views of the ocean, a gas fireplace and kitchen with microwave and refrigerator but no stove. The suites in the house are also great but no kintchen. They are a B+B so you get a fabulous breakfast and we had a special with chocolates and champagne. You can't beat their location on Fort HIll in the National Seashore and you will be only 20-30 minutes from all the goings on in both Chatham for First Night, and Provincetown with the variety of shows, concerts, shops etc. Fodor's just did a short review of them as part of a slide show www.fodors.com/wire/archives/001940.cfm slides 28-31 are about this area. good luck!
