Best Oregon Coast Beaches for Kids
 

I'm looking for recommendations for wading beaches for small kids on the Oregon Coast (yes, I know the water is cold, my kids don't care). I'm not concerned so much with the town's amenities, just shallow wide beaches for kids to play on. We were looking at the Newport area, but I can't seem to find much information about the beaches themselves. Thanks!

Cannon Beach has lovely beaches, HayStack Rock where you can search for starfish in the Tidepools..
Seaside - north of Cannon Beach - has a boardwalk and stuff for kids..

We liked how clean the beaches were in Cannon Beach also.

My favorite beach - south of Newport is the beach at Heceta Head
( also called Devils Elbow State Park) Its not a huge beach- more of a cove, there are rocks to climb on, a cave to explore, and a river comes down to the beach the kids love playing in ( very shallow) I have even seen kids in flotation devices floating down the river part.
You can build a fire on the beach and there is usually a lot of driftwood around and when you are tired of all that, you can climb the trail to the light house.

Seaside has a great beach, there is also a small aquarium and a carousel in the enclosed mall they may enjoy there. Have fun! ***kim*** ((#))

Newport is known more for the attractions of the town, but I think beaches there are suitable for kids wading. I know Cannon Beach and Seaside would work, and both with the added options of renting skim-boards and fun-cycles. If you're planning purely for the kids, Seaside, with its arcades and carnival attractions might make the most sense. But I'm betting the adults in the group would much prefer Cannon Beach.

How old are the kids, and what type of accommodations are you looking for?

We were at Indian Beach yesterday in Cannon Beach and there were lots of small children wading in the water here. This is a beautiful, scenic beach in Cannon Beach. **kim*** ((*))

Kim, what are you talking about? Indian Beach in Cannon Beach - never heard of it - and I've been going there for 50 years. Where abouts would that be located?

Indian Beach is in Ecola State Park just north of Canon Beach and is a beautiful beach with facilities for picnicking as well as hiking opportunities.

Thank you Orcas. I did know about the Indian Beach you were referring to - but not one located within Cannon Beach itself. We have always considered them to be two separate beaches.

What town would you consider Indian Beach to be in then, if not Cannon Beach?

Go to Ecola State Park and follow the signs to Indian Beach, it is a scenic drive back to Indian Beach through the trees and forest area. Wooden steps will take you down to the beach, the views are stunning from the parking lot here! ***kim*** ((f))

There is a small town called Pacific City that is about a half an hours drive from Lincoln city. The beach there has a huge sand dune that is very popular with the kids. It is a quite family beach that is famous for dory fisherman. On the other side of the dune is a beautiful cave and rocky area where you can find lots of shells and unique rocks. I enjoy it and so do many others.

Since countrycowgirl brought this 4.5 year old topic to the top, I will let others know my favorite sandy southern Oregon beaches. Gold Beach with a visitor center just south of town with a trail over to the beach, Sunset Beach State Park (with camping) SW of Coos Bay and the Oregon Dunes just north of Reedsport.

Lots of good beaches to explore on the Oregon coast (not necessrily to swim - unless you are part polar bear like moi) - and one of my favorites is Depot Bay - just south of Lincoln City - and from the Surfrider Resort - perched on a cliff - you might be able to see some whales.
