Best of's on Martha's Vineyard? Beaches? Things to do?

I'll be there for a week with my honey. What should we not miss doing or seeing while we're there?
Best Beaches?
Hiking paths?
Biking?
Views?
Sunset?
Place for happy hour?

Haven't been there in a while, but the bike trail from Oak Bluffs to Edgartown is a 10. You will bike right past some of the nicest beaches anywhwere. You can just park your bike and hop in. This trail is on the Sound, so the water is warm and calm. I wouldn't consider the Vinyard as prime hiking country, although I believe you can hike around Gay Head, which is quite scenic - just watch out for ticks. As for happy hour, realize that some towns are 'dry'. Oak Bluffs is perhaps the livliest town, with several bars.

Thanks, zootsi, for the tick reminder.

Visitors should familiarize themselves with Lyme disease and Babesiosis and check themselves and each other daily for deer ticks, the vector for these diseases. Do not walk through tall grass if you can help it, wear light colored long sleeve shirts and trousers if you must. It takes 24 hours for the tick to attach, so you needn't panic if you find one when you look DAILY. This advice applies on both islands ad really anywhere along the coast from the Cape through Long Island Sound.

The Vineyard also has tularemia. I don't think any visitor has ever gotten it, but if you see a bunny acting funny, don't go near him.

i always used to like South Beach (aka Katama) the best, but the last time I went to the Vineyard a few years ago, it was so crowded and hard to park there. It is a lovely beach, however.

I still love East Beach. You take the Chappy ferry, and you have to pay to park, both of which tend to keep the crowds down. Its beautiful.

Happy Hour and Sunset have the same answer...take your own chairs, and a bottle of wine or thermos of your favorite beverage, and go to Menemesha to the beach to watch the sunset.

if you are renting a place, and will be doing a little cooking, make sure to go to Morning Glory farms. We always go before shopping at the A&P, because we base our groceries on what we find there. they have baked goods and other stuff, as well as fruits and veggies.

And another vote for Chilmark Chocolates. Do stop there when you are in the neighborhood.

Really great suggestions, thank you! Zootsi, I will definitely check out the bike trail. It sounds wonderful! China cat, for the beach in Menemsha is there just one? Is there a particular place to go/park for the sunset? Is it also a good beach for the day?

This is old but I just did a quick search. If you are a member or the trustees, bring your membership card and see if there is anything new available.

Oh and I don't think we told you why you should visit Chilmark Chocoalates. It is groundbreaking special needs program that makes very good chocoalte. I had the honor to get a private tour and meet the staff.

This is an old article. Not sure what they are up to these days.

If you're in Martha's Vineyard around the 23rd of August, take in the wild show at:

They're known as The Pullmen, very popular on the west coast. Grandson's Shane ("frontman") and Syd (at the drums). Enjoy!
