best of USA

Ei guys,

I want to ask for your opinions, it is safe to travel by a van? Right now, we are plannig to have a vacation in Australia but in the near future, the next destination we're planning is the USA. Any recommendation regarding the best places in USA and any quality vehicles we can rent. I am grateful for your recommendation and suggestion.

Thanks,
Cris

We need more info to answer your questions. First, what are you interested in? Nature? Cities? History? Beaches? Mountains? When would you be coming? How long would you be staying? Are you interested in a particular area of the country?

Do you mean a recreational vehicle, like a big thing you sleep in?

Minivans are easy to come by, and can be rented through any commercial rental agency, so I don't think that is what you are referring to.

And what do you mean by safe? Lots of people drive rvs or minivans. They are as safe as the driver. The big recreational vehicles burn fuel so are expensive but provide a place to sleep at night.

I found this website that talks about renting recreational vehicles (they used to be called motor homes).

I don't know anything about this, though. Give us more info and we'll be glad to give you more suggestions than you ever wanted to hear.

where are you from? no offense, but asking what the "best" places are in the USA is like asking what the best hair product is for your hair. We don't know your likes and dislikes, what you're looking for, how much time you have, and it takes 5 hours to fly across the US....there are too many places to be able to list in a single post.

Agree you need to give us a lot more info:

Who/how many you are

How much time you will have

What your interests are (vans are worse than useless in a of of cities) - nature/ hiking, museums, clubs - big cities or countryside or a mix

What time of year you will be coming (summer is hot as hell in much of the south - winter brings really bad weather - blizzards to the north)

When you say van are you talking about an RV you sleep in - or do you need a van because there are so many of you? (Many places in the US you can;t just sleep pull over and sleep in a van - you would be considered derelicts and moved on.)

(RVing works in certain parts of the US and is impossible in others - due to the nature of cities, lack of places to put them, local laws etc.)

I checked Cris423's other post here: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...s423&fid=1 and I think they rented a recreational vehicle last time.

As someone who's had one kind of recreational vehicle or another for the last 30+ years and we have traveled to 40 different states (including Alaska), I will say that it is safe to travel in the US in a van, but you have to be careful. You won't want to spend the night at rest areas. Campgrounds will be safer. What time of the year you come will make a difference in where you will want to travel. So as others have mentioned, more information is needed.
