best of the gold rush towns?

I would like to take my husband to one of the Gold Rush towns for just 1 or 2 nights after a business trip in Sacramento in May 2007. Which is the best town to base in? Any suggestions on charming/quirky places to stay? Any MUST SEEs?
Thanks
Leslie

How far do you want to go? I'd like to check out Bodie - it's on the other side of Yosemite.

For 1 or 2 nights, Bodie is a pretty long haul. I'd stick to the towns along Hwy 49. I am partial to Nevada City myself.

Nevada City would be a lovely little town to stay in, I agree with J Correa. You could drive further on Hwy 49 and check out the tiny little Sierra City while you are there.

I meant to mention, Sierra City has a nice B&B, I can get you the name of it if you like. The owners are long time frinds of my stepson. It would certainly be relaxing and enjoyable if you enjoy the outdoors. May would be a good month to visit.

Very nice B&B in Coloma just down from the Gold Discovery Park. Sutter Creek and Jackson are also very interesting.

Love Nevada City but it seems every time I go up there I get a parking ticket.

Sutter Creek is a lovely, gold rush little town with fun shopping and the area has some interesting sightseeing.

Columbia is further south, just off Highway 49 and gives a sense of the old west.

Sierra City is a great place - as is Downieville. My family used to spend summer vacations up there every year.

I don't know what your budget is but I was recently looking for an anniversaary getaway and I found this spot:
http://www.querencia.ws/

It may be too spendy but there would be lots to do around there including wine tasting and the towns of Columbia, Angels Camp, Sonora and Jamestown. In May it would be a beautiful drive on 16 out of town and then 49 to 4. You could also visit Calavaras Big Trees and Caverns.

Hi J_Correa I wonder if you knew my stepchildren? Well of course I won't post their names here..but maybe you did. The family has several properties in Sierra City..I think they are going to put them up for sale as everyone lives to far away now to take advantage of them, which is a shame.

While Nevade city and Sierra City are great - I'd personally stay south of Placerville somewher along the Plymouth, Amador City, Sutter Creek, San Andreas corridor. You would have: Gold Rush connections, Redwoods, Columbia SP, gourmet restaurants, about 40 wineries, and even a day trip into Yosemite Valley might be possible.

Here are few places to check out

Hi daffy, I just called my stepson, he was not home, so I left a message for him to email the B&B info for Sierra City (I should know it..but I can't remember lol). BTW, he and his wife and some family members just returned from three weeks in Tuscany, they rented a villa there. Quite a relaxing a delightful vacation for them too. I will post back on this thread of yours as soon as I receive the email. Best regards!

LoveItaly - it's possible we know them, but we generally camped around Sardine or Packer lakes or stayed in the tent cabins at Salmon lake. Sometimes we backpacked farther in. I don't remember us ever staying in town.

Hi J_Correa, you probably don't know them than as they have always stayed in the various houses/cabins in Sierra City. Such a beautiful area!

Daffy, I haven't received the email yet regarding the info on the B&B.
