Best of SF motel for less than 100$
Hello :-)
We are planning our california trip in April 05 and now I'm looking for the nicest motel in San Francisco: nice area, nearby public transportation, and most important: not an old and run down room. I would love to get some suggestions from you :-) linchen from Germany PS. i don't want to use priceline :-) |
pps: we won't have a car there ;-)
If you don't have a car, and you want to be in the city, then you want a hotel, not a motel. We stayed at the San Remo a few years back. A very pleasant small hotel, elegantly decorated, in a good location. It was under $100 a night and in the North Beach area, about 2 blocks from a cable car stop, and a short walk to Fisherman's Wharf.
I know you said no priceline, but it really is great. I got a Hyatt at Union Sq. for $60 a night and it fits all your criteria.
A lot of people recommend the Francisco Bay Inn on this site.
I know you said you didn't want to do priceline, but I got the Marriott for $65 one week-end. It was awesome. The other value I've taken advantage of is Hotwire. We got the Prescott (a Kimpton boutique hotel) for $105 this past August. It was wonderful and the regular rates were about $180. Good luck!
I used hotels.com and got the Adante Hotel right off Union Square and within walking distance of everything for about $60 a night. For around $100 a night you can get a suite there. The cable cars are just 2 blocks away.
Have a GREAT time. |
thank you for your recommendations :)
I'll check them all out and I promise that I will at least have a look at priceline ;) linchen |
I highly recommend the Columbus Motor Inn. We recently stayed there for less than $100/night (before tax) and were quite pleased. The room was very nice and it was a short walk to Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach. The bus stopped right in front of the hotel and it isn't far from the cable car turnaround (although the line was always long) We had a car, but never took it out of the garage. We walked or used public transporation.
Once again I'll recommend Cow Hollow Motor Inn on Lombard. It's a block to the "main" bus line which will take you practically everywhere -- large rooms and nice, and within your budget.
Another vote for the Columbus Motor Inn. Great location and value. The great Italian restaurants at North Beach are all in walking distance.
DO NOT stay at The Presidio Inn on Lombard St. The noise level is unacceptable at all times of the night (especially on weekends). We stayed there in August this year and had booked two nights. I forfeited the second night it was so bad. In fact, the one night we did stay put me off San Francisco altogether. Next time I go I'm staying at The Orchard even though they want US$40 a night to park your car!!
$40 to park your car at a hotel in SF is not out of the ordinary.
I don't know if you are interested in this type of place but I have heard good things about the Hayes Valley Inn, a small European-style hotel (shared bath) at Hayes & Gough. The price is right and the neighborhood is centrally located and filled with good shopping & restaurants.

San Remo Hotel. Very clean / great location. Less than $100.
I always stay there. |
San Remo is shared baths I think...important bit of information to include with a recommendation.
Columbus Motor Inn is great but up in the $125 range much of the year since we Fodorites have made it so popular. Take a look at the Cartwright Hotel, too, and check out Boulevards.com for some decent special hotel rates and good info on visiting San Fran |
When we're in SF we usually stay at the Columbus Motor Inn. We have also stayed at the Cow Hollow Motor Inn. We like them both. In all the times staying at either we've never paid over $100/night for the two of us. As a matter of fact we will be going in just a few weeks, staying at the Columbus and it's under $100/night with free parking.

btw...my college aged daughter prefers the Cow Hollow. She likes it's location better.
I'd totally agree with your daughter, tlegray.
