Best of Lubbock, Texas?
 

In November I'll be visiting a friend who just moved to Lubbock and while I've been there before, I'd like some opinions (especially from people who have lived there) on best eating, shopping, entertainment, etc. I've done the Buddy Holly museum and eaten at County Line, Zbas and Gardskis. Since I plan to do some Christmas shopping, any suggestions outside the mall? We love eclectic stuff and are hippies at heart, so suggest away! Thanks!

Jayne - I've been there twice. My husband was hired to cook a dinner on both occassions.

The most interesting thing we found was a mud-slinging motor speedway with cars that had flames shooting out of the tailpipes. He took off his chef's jacket, and was immediately properly dressed in his wife-beater undershirt.

Another time we sneaked into an archeology dig going on in a park.

Although it is a college town - Texas Tech. It does not have a college town vibe like Austin. For goodness sakes...if you want to buy beer/wine, you have to go to "the strip" where all the liquor stores are lit up like Vegas and it's all drive-through.

Hehe, Pepper. Nothing quite like West Texas, I suppose. Sounds like you had some decent adventures there. I may have to head out to "the strip" and drive through for a bottle of Boonsfarm Strawberry Hill just for fun!

Har har har, uhhh -- I know, I know. But we all know that when in West Texas you have to "make your own fun."

Ah Lubbock. When we lived in W's hometown, we used to drive there to shop. Check out Malouf's for high-end clothing.

Whatever you do don't drink the tap water. I don't think it will hurt you, but it is the vilest tasting liquid you will ever encounter.

What's that old song about Lubbock in the Rearview Mirror? Maybe that is what uhh was referring to. I'd like to pick up some of that wine... have anyone tried it?

Cap Rock Winery is just outside of Lubbock if I recall correctly.

Albany is Southeast of Lubbock. It's a totally separate trip.

Thanks for the ideas, everyone. I know it's hard to get excited about Lubbock. I just hope the weather is decent.

Ah Lubbock, where the men are men and the sheep are scared.

There are several wineries in the area other than Caprock. Llano Estacado, Pheasant Ridge. The following is a link to a map of wineries in the area. http://www.texaswinetrails.com/palo.htm

Other than that, Lubbock reminds me of my first blind date in college -- flat, boring and dry.

Your assessment of Lubbock is right on -- good thing West Texas people can be so much fun!

Finally back from West Texas. Made it to Llanno Estacado winery and bought a bottle of red and some wine-filled chocolates for Christmas gifts.

Best food was at Zbas -- their unique salmon dish is primo! My friend took me to the city's hottest new Mexican food place -- Ruby Tequila's. It was OK but not worthy of the crowd it drew, IMO.

For shopping, nothing much of interest... ducked into Malouf's and right back out after seeing a "pretty" sweater with a price tag of $475. The Lubbock mall has two Dillards -- one for men and one for women. I'd never seen that before.

I'll be going back from time to time and would welcome any more Lubbock suggestions.
