Best of.......

Please list your favorite vacation spot and why. Be specific and limit it to only one. This should be fun.

Having vacationed in many places around the world, there is one place that is number 1 in my book. That is why we keep going back every few months or so. That place is Las Vegas. No other place like it anywhere.

Audrey Oct 22nd, 1999 08:03 AM

The coast of Maine--every inch of it, any time of year...
Lori Oct 22nd, 1999 08:36 AM

OK, I know that this is the US forum, and I have travelled quite extensively throughout the US and Europe. My first choice is Paris, and my second (with apologies to Troy) is San Francisco.

Troy Oct 22nd, 1999 09:59 AM

Lori's in the preverbial dog house! :)

Alisa Oct 22nd, 1999 03:28 PM

In the United States, I don't think any place can beat San Francisco. The museums, the park, the food....fabulous.
One of the best things about the city is that you can get anywhere via public transportation. As for the rest of the world, I think that the Amalfi coast is wonderful.

Denise Oct 22nd, 1999 03:47 PM

I agree...my choice is San Francisco. I'm hopefully going back in December!!!

Denise Blackmore
CruiseShipCenters
http://www.cruise-the-world.com

Without a doubt--Grand Cayman Island. Lots to do, beautiful and safe.

bertie Oct 22nd, 1999 07:23 PM

Since no U.S. restriction was given, no hesitation in voting for Sydney. The list of positives is too long to list.

Being the US forum, seems like we should stick to US.

Once, I think I would've said: NYC. I fell in love (it met EVERY expectation!) with that town when I was 18. Last month's visit - the first time EVER that I didn't love it-- has me re-thinking. Just what kind of PR machine does Mayor Rudy have going for him? The smell/garbage was worse than it's ever been....

Truthfully, I have NO idea how to answer this. If a person NEVER managed to get overseas, there still is enough diversity/beauty in this country (and this continent) to satisfy.

How can you possibly pick between the tear-bringing grandeur of the Redwoods, the peace and stillness of an undisturbed Looziana swamp or midwest soybean field, or the promise offered by glowing city spires...or glistening snow-capped peaks?

Which, I think, means that you have to bring "sentiment" into the decision - i.e.: Where I've Been While I've Been Happiest.

Still a hard one. I've been editing and thinking for almost half an hour...and will wind up with: the East Coast. Not very specific....but it touches my soul. Our visit back (r/t from NYC to NS, thru MS, ME, etc..) reminded me how much I love it..how much there is there to SEE, how close it is to so many other things.....

NYC - There is no other city that can top! Second choice, a category below - San Francisco

steve Oct 26th, 1999 03:33 PM

New York City-it is still the most exciting place in the U.S.

Debbie Oct 26th, 1999 04:08 PM

So far ... As for a city, San Francisco-lots to do from museums, theatre, parks, food and on and on.

National Park-Yosemite/Mt Ranier/Death Valley-all so very different, but the natural beauty of each speaks volumes.

Outside the US-Bermuda-beautiful, safe, lots to do, nothing to do.

Haven't stopped looking though ...

sammie Oct 26th, 1999 05:11 PM

The next vacation spot, wherever it is. Always looking forwards to the next, and I am right, it is always great.

John Oct 26th, 1999 11:41 PM

I'm a little biased, but I would have to say Maui. I came to Hawaii in 1994 on vacation and have yet to leave. Now that's a vacation : )

Paul Rabe Oct 27th, 1999 04:55 AM

Hawaii. Perfect weather all the time, friendly people, gorgeous scenery.

Roy Oct 27th, 1999 05:14 AM

Maine.

Lobster, lighthouses, tree-covered rocky shores. No people.

cherie Oct 27th, 1999 09:28 AM

Seattle. Lots to do and see there. Mt. Raindeer, the islands, coffee spots, hsopping, great variety of restaurants and cultural agenda items. After going there once to check out a car (didn't buy it), we couldn't wait to come back with the kids. They loved it, too. Pikes Mkt....the lake area....the college area....Bellevue....I could go on and on.

Troy Oct 28th, 1999 05:40 AM

Howdy Folks!

Thanks for all of the responses so far but I sure am hoping for more. I know that I have better things to do but I calculated how many of you cited the same city and which cities were cited. I eliminated duplicate posts and posts that weren't applicable (i.e. mine) for a total of 15 replies.
Here's the results....

Las Vegas, 1 vote, 6.7%
Maine, 2 votes, 13.3%
Paris, 1 vote, 6.7%
San Francisco, 3 votes, 20.0%
Grand Cayman, 1 vote, 6.7%
Sydney, 1 vote, 6.7%
East Coast, 1 vote, 6.7%
New York City, 1 vote, 6.7%
Anywhere, 1 vote, 6.7%
Maui/Hawaii 2 votes, 13.3%

Yes, I was kind of assuming that since this is the U.S. forum, the answers would be domestic.

What?
No D.C.?
No Philadelphia?
No Boston?
No Chicago?
That's interesting.

arjay Oct 29th, 1999 10:01 PM

Troy _ well, you're right, of course...and wrong. IMHO...If you contrast responses here to the wide-ranging ones, say, on the Europe forum, which scarcely would be confined to metro areas...I think you'd be hearing a much wider range of opinions...

They're nice certainly (the urban centers), any one of them-- and each offers a plethora of cultural/urban expolorations.

But what about the (many) wide-open spaces we're lucky enuf to have available to us in the US....???? And the horizon-expanding experiences we can find in any of these fantastic locations???

Betsy Nov 1st, 1999 03:26 AM

Las Vegas without a doubt!

Debbie Nov 3rd, 1999 06:03 AM

SWEET HOME CHICAGO!!!!!!!!! We travel all over the US and world for work but Chicago truly encompasses everything you would want. Unbelievable -museums,dining,sport venues, lakefront with all its fun activities, friendly people,CLEANLINESS of city, etc.( It has a small town feeling in a major urban setting of 8 million people.)Most people will agree that once you have been to Chicago-you would like to go back.
