Best NYC Hamburger - Less than $10
Two weeks in NYC for work, including a weekend with my 20 year old son. We're both hamburger fanatics and are looking for recommendations for your favorite hamburgers, including old-fashion greasy.
Thank you all!! |

Well, the first one I ever had in NYC (at a business lunch, believe it or not) was at Jackson Hole - and I still like it.
http://www.jacksonholeburgers.com/ The last one I had was at Good Burger http://goodburgerny.com/ It happened to be across the street from my favorite store and we decided to stop in. It was a great burger - and the Coney Island Lager was good too :-) http://www.shmaltzbrewing.com/CONEY/index.html |
Locals pointed us to Shake Shack, was a good burger and a really good shake!

Corner Bistro long time rep. Long lines on the weekend. Use the map hard to find
http://cornerbistrony.com/ Spotted pig-very popular spot Bonus absolutely fantastic shoestring fries http://www.thespottedpig.com/ Black Iron Looks more like a bar, uncomfortable chairs, terrific onion rings http://www.thespottedpig.com/ Most unexpected place for a burger Burger Joint at The Parker Meridian http://parkermeridien.com/eat4.php Paul's Second Ave just south of St. Mark's This is a divey dive spot where the women who wait on tables may or may not pay attention if there is ball game on the TV. On the same block as Pomme Frites, tourists walk right by it and head for the potatoes. Not as good as some of the other places but this is a true neighborhood dive without a moment of pretense. Shake Shack Interminable lines, have only been to the one in Madison Square park. Each burger made to order thus the ridiculous lines. |
On the southwest corner of Carnegie Hall, try Carnegie Johns for an original street cart experience.

The new location of Shake Shack in Battery Park didn't have any lines when we went there a few weeks ago. If you are visiting Ground Zero, it is nearby.
|
We liked Shake Shack too. Five Napkin Burger was recommended to us, but we haven't made it there yet. Might be pricier than what you're looking for.
|
Another vote for Shake Shack.
|
I'm curious (I've never eaten there), is the Shake Shack burger a great burger among <i>all</i> burgers, or is it a great <I>fast food</I> burger?
|
The quality of the burger is very good.
|
sf7307 it's a good restaurant burger. Most similar to Taxi's in Palo Alto that I've had.
|
Monica, I don't think Taxi's burgers are very good :-). (BTW, Taxi's in Palo Alto is no longer in business).
|
IMO Shake Shack is a very good fast food burger.
For more meaty burgers, my under $10 favorite is at the Fairway Cafe on the UWS. For those who don't know, Fairway is a legendary (in NYC) market/gourmet store, so the meat in the upstairs restaurant is high quality and super fresh. The burger is a good size that an average person can actually eat and comes with excellent fries. It costs just about what you'd pay at Shake Shack for a double burger and fries. I used to like the Five Napkin Burger when it was first featured at Nice Matin. It was pricey then and I believe it hovers around $15 at the newer namesake restaurants. Too big and messy for my tastes these days. another slightly over $10 favorite also on the UWS is at Kefi. Truly great grilled meaty taste, and served with amazing house made potato ships and a small greek salad. Worth every penny of the $12 price and then some |
Well, back in the day (like 10 years ago) Taxi's burgers were pretty good. Maybe they changed and that's why they're no longer in business? :)

NYer
I predict financial trouble for Fairway in about three years. They are expanding too fast, their prices have risen far above any inlfationary index, and too often we purchase things that spoil quickly. They are losing their edge for all the reasons people were first attracted. |
