Aloha from Kaua`i!
I've just started getting RAVE reviews about the food & entertainment at the newly-renovated ResortQuest Maka`iwa (Kapa`a). Lu`au is held in a tent on side of property, so no oceanview. It starts early, has limited seating (so you're not part of a thundering herd), and lets out by about 8:30. Google for the resort, to get an overview.
Local favorite here on Kaua`i is still the venerable Smith's Family event, on the Wailua River:

Hyatt Po`ipu has a lovely garden, oceanview setting, great food, and good entertainment:

Princeville Hotel's lu`au seems to be sliding toward oblivion. Visitors have been sharing their less-than-complimentary reviews lately.

We just vacationed on The Big Island and Maui 3 weeks ago. I strongly STRONGLY recommend the luau at The Kona Village Resort. It is authentic, not cheesy, and romantic setting. Take a walk around the grounds. . .they are so romantic, they make you feel like you've been dropped in an ancient Hawaiian village complete with dozens and dozens of thatched roof hales. When we were there last month, we got a deal on staying there the night of the luau and it was wonderful!

We've been to Kauai several times and always enjoyed the luau @ the Hyatt in Poipu, inside, if there is rain in the forcast and outside otherwise. I guess location would be a problem if you were staying on the north side.

Friends just came back from the Luau at the Hyatt in Kauai. Said it was the best ever and the food really delicious. It's held on the lawn in front of the ocean. Beautiful setting. We've seen the show before and think it's really good.
