Best luau in Big Island

Which luau in the Big Island do you recommend, especially for little kids? Even better, which of the best luaus are not too pricey? Thank you.

The best luau on the big island is at Kona Village. Bar none. But you must make your reservations early--and if you are traveling in September, forget about it because the resort is open to adults only. Otherwise it is perfect for children because they can see up close the pig being cooked.

Thanks, hart. I've read about the Kona Village being the best as well in a travel guide. I'll go check on the prices and hope I can afford it. I have discount coupons for the Royal Kona and the King something-something luaus. Does anyone know if they're good?

anne... there's a good luau at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott on A-Bay in the Kohala area. (And I'm very critical of luaus - think they're expensive for what you get.) But everyone who visits Hawaii probably needs to go to one, and if you can't go to the Old Lahaina on Maui or the Kona Village one (my sister went there, and said it was really authentic & informative, but expensive), I'd go to the one at A-Bay. It's a smaller, slightly less expensive one, but the food was good, and the music and dancing excellent. The M.C. was not cheesy, like some I've seen. I'm sure you could get a discount on this one, probably. Ask the desk at your hotel/concierge where you might get discount coupons for it. That's how we got in for half-price, booked it through the hotel there, and the concierge pointed out that he could give us a 2-for-1 coupon. Have a wonderful time in Hawaii!

Hello Bonnie: I have heard the one ao the Waikoloa Outrigger Marriott is good too and it is $67.00 pp. What do you think about this? Thanks, Larry.

bonniebroad Jul 13th, 2004 12:57 PM

Larry, it certainly isn't cheap BUT I know that is probably not as expensive as some of the better-known luaus now. I would really try to get a discount........... but pay that price if I had to. :-) How far away is your trip now?

Thanks Bonnie. We will be there in about two weeks. Can't wait!

Hello Anne: When will you be there and where are you staying?

We enjoy the Royal Kona Resort Luau and our 7 year old grandson absolutely loves it - he got to see the pig being taken out of the ground and he loved the fire dancer. It is not as pricey as some of the others.

Thanks, everyone for your tips. We will be in Hawaii the second week of August. Counting down the days...

anneofingleside Jul 13th, 2004 05:29 PM

...and we're staying at the Hilton Waikoloa. Where I don't need wetsuits in August. ;)

bonniebroad Jul 13th, 2004 05:40 PM

Anne, the Waikoloa Beach Marriott is right next door to the Hilton Waikoloa, so it would be convenient for you to go over to the luau there.:-)

Way to go Anne. LOL!

We did the King Kamehameha Hotel luau, and it ws fun. Before it starts, they do some simple crafts (weaving a fish out of palm fronds, marker "tattoos") that the kids would like. Everyone gets to watch as the pig is taken out of the imu, too.

We got discounts by sitting through a timeshare presentation to get a Diamond Card. It cut the price of many attractions in half!
