Best Kauai Tours

My husband and I will be in Kauai in two weeks--birthday surprise. I'm four months pregnant so I'm supposed to avoid strenuous activities, but I want some adventure.

How rough are the Napali Coast catamaran tours? Who do you recommend?

Also, I really want a short kayak tour. I'm torn about which is best. I've heard good things about the Kipu falls tour. Any other recommendations.

Finally, where to go for a nice (but not outrageously priced) birthday dinner?

Thank you so much

Dear Christine:

Last June my husband and a buddy did a tube float trip. The tubes float thru old plantation canals. They really enjoyed it and it wasn't too strenuous. Do a search up above. There was recently a report on this.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! You didn't mention what area you are staying in on Kauai.

The Beach House in Poipu has a nice view of the water, make reservations in advance (usually the beginning of your stay) for a sunset dining time. Also, Tidepools at the Hyatt Resort is very good, ask for a table next to the waterfall and Koi pond.

I have also been trying to get recommendations for the na pali catamaran tour. See my post entitled 'na pali catamaran tour'. Were you referring to the Kipu ATV tour. Can you do that while pregnant? I was thinking about the kipu ATV tour as well. I emailed them to ask which ATV tour was most scenic and they told me the ranch tour was, but maybe that's just the one they are trying to sell right now.

Dear Christine:

You may also want to consider how handy bathrooms will be, especially if you do much bouncing around. The Napali coast tour depends on how the weather is but most boats have toilets.

Beach House is very nice and worth it.

Have fun and congrats.

Given your pregnancy, I'd suggest that you keep to activities which allow _you_ to determine the speed/jostling yourself.

Stay away from any of our rivers and streams -- leptosporosis always here, more so following a rain -- a definite hazard to the fetus (and you!). Lepto can't live in salt water -- if water's not brown, you're safe.

Snorkeling from the beach -- Po`ipu, Ke`e, Makua, or `Anini, to name just a few.

ATV tours -- you should be able to do this, as long as you're the one controlling the vehicle's speed/route.

Na Pali tours -- the upwind leg will _always_ be bumpy; I wouldn't suggest this while you're pregnant.

Nat'l Tropical Botanical Garden tours -- we've got 'em, they're gorgeous, and they offer an easy hike as well.

Take care of yourself and that precious cargo you're carrying! 8-)

We'll be staying at the Wailua Bayview on the Coconut Coast. We'd looked at places on the north shore but wanted easy access to the South and West as well.

I'm not looking at the ATM tour--definitely out for pregnancy as is horseback riding. But Ultimate Kauai recommends Outfitter Kauai's Kipu Falls kayak tour. However, it has optional ziplining and cliff swings and I fear I might be tempted to overdo it.

Thanks all for the Beach House Restaurant. I'll have my husband make reservations this weekend.

What's 'upwind leg' auntiemaria? Is there more 'upwind leg' doing the trip from Hanalei or Poipu?

katolb90:

None of the boat rides make a circle of the island...they depart and return to just one harbor.

No matter what time of day, or what season of the year, or which port is the departure point, every Na Pali boat ride will have an "upwind leg" -- going against the ocean current and/or prevailing winds.

Sometimes the ocean is calm, and the upwind leg is mild...but usually we've got strong currents and some wind, which can make the upwind leg of a journey, a bit of a thrill ride. Hang on! :-d

I understand that neither one makes a circle. I wanted to know which tour has the most 'upwind leg' doing the trip from Poipu or doing the trip from Hanalei? Maybe a better question is what direction are the prevailing winds along north/west Kauai coast.

My niece went last summer and Capt Andy's was the only one who would take a pregnant woman.
