Diane, First Night happens all over Boston. They have a website ( www.firstnight.org) and you can see that wherever you stay, be it Back Bay or the Harbor, will be near something. The Haynes Auditorium at the Prudential center, which is attached to the Sheraton, is the site of a lot of activity, and the Marriot Copley Place and the Westin are all attached via walkways/Malls to it. I always cut through them on First Night to stay warm.

If you buy the First Night button you then have admission to the Haynes, as well as to hundreds of other indoor concerts, presentations, etc. The parade is free, as are the ice sculptures, fire works, etc. But, I'd have to say that unless you want to watch the fireworks from your hotel room, any hotel in Boston would be a convenient one to some part of First Night's activities. Just be prepared to dress warm and do lots of walking.

I've now looked briefly at their website and they actually have an official Firstnight hotel with a package deal which you may want to check out. They've also added 7pm fireworks over the Boston Common for the little kids (and adults) who don't want to go to the Harbor at midnight. Have a great time, whatever you decide.
