Best hiking near DC?
Best hiking, not mountain/rock climbing, within 1-2 hours of DC?

Hi-- there are a lot of great trails around the DC area. Check out Trails.com for more info. You can search for trails and it gives details on difficulty, etc...
The Shenandoah area in VA is a beautiful spot. Also, there are some great places in Western MD.

Shenandoah National Park is about a 2 hour drive and has lots of trails of varying difficulty. Closer in, there is Great Falls (VA and MD), not as spectacular as Shenandoah but a lot closer.

Easy hikes are available right in DC, in the various trails through Rock Creek Park. Kind of noisy though (cars, airplanes, etc.), so don't expect to feel like you're getting back to nature.

One of the more popular places to hike for some of us in the DC area is "Old Rag". It is on the edge of the Shenandoah, out by Sperryville/Front Royal. Probably 1 1/2 to 2 hours from downtown DC. Once you hike to the top, there is a fabulous view. Maybe this website will help you out => http://www.summitpost.com/mountains/...ountain_id=685

Go to ava.org and check out the 'year round' walks section. It is a series of (usually) 10 km walks
